Also had this problem and after reading various threads with suggestions and fixes, the one thing that worked for me was to close steam, navigate to the Dragon Age launcher within steam>steamapps>common>DragonAge...click on the Dragon Age launcher and the game kicks in after it launches steam and so on. For some reason, for myself atleast, it would appear that steam or whatever thinks the game is already running before trying this method/work around.

Just to add...after using the above mentioned work around, i can now launch Dragon Age through steam now. God knows what was up.

Yes, give it a try and if it works then it should launch as normal the next time. Did for me anyway.

You must shut steam down completely first ! then launch the game from the exe in the steampps/ common folder

It helps is the launcher is run as admin and compatibility xp mode too,

key thing is to SHUT DOWN STEAM FIRST though, after you run the exe from the folder, it will log you into steam, then you click play and Voila !

Enjoy, you do not need to download it again
I just launched from outside of steam and it worked thanks man!

worked for me the first time but now I can't launch it whatsoever... I only hear the music and it's in my processes list... seriously I've bought many games on Steam. but EA games give me these stupid troubles!

I have tried everything and still cannot get this game to run. Sad was looking forward to playing the entire series from beginning to end on my new computer.

I have a few things you could try if your up for it.

1. Try lowering your graphics/texture settings to medium or low. Try and see if that corrects your issue.

Reason: Game was originally designed for the highest graphics/texture settings to be on what we call medium and was never properly optimized for what is available now.

Note: If you end up doing what is suggested in the 3rd option, you can change your graphics/textures settings to whatever you wish.

2. Go to your game install folder's redist folder to run DXSetup (In the DirectX folder), physx and vcredist exes to install the software on them. Try and see if that corrects your issue.

Reason: Sometimes steam misses these or doesn't run them properly during setup.

3. Go to site in the link below and follow along with it's "modding video step-by-step tutorial for DA:O" from the beginning to the 4gb Patch. After doing so, see if your problem is corrected.

https://www.nexusmods.com/dragonage/mods/5989

Reason: The game still is limited to using 1 - 2 gb of RAM since it was originally released. Due to newer graphical settings, DLC and various tweaks found in the present version the game requires more RAM than it was designed. The method shown in the tutorial is the correct way to apply the 4gb patch on Steam.

4. Get the game through the EA App.

Reason: There is a exclusive update only available through the EA App that helps the game work on modern hardware/computers compared to when the game was made.

Note: If going the EA App route, you can just do the 4gb patch on it mentioned in the 3rd option and be good to go.

5. Get the game through GOG.

Reason: Alternative if you don't want the EA App. Just as easy to apply the 4gb patch to it as it is on the EA App.
