Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition

Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition

First Playthrough Suggestions.
I'm just wondering if there is a recommended race/class/origin for those who are playing the game for the first time. I find it to be an enjoyable game but I can't seem to settle on what way to start it. If there are any suggestions for the race/origin/class or any other things, feel free to post them. All tips appreciated :)

Thanks in advance.

Well, race and origin dont effect to much, just how some of the story is set up and how some people react to you. The only race that effects class is dwarfs (Dwarves?) because they cant be mages. Class does effect origin, as all mages are in the magi origin. Class is really personal opinion.
Well I'm trying to figure out which would be the best one to do a first playthrough with, I have one going as a Warrior but it doesn't seem all that engaging, so I was wondering if I should stick with that character or start over with a more interesting one to get a better impression of the game. I don't want to think the game is boring because my first couple of hours weren't as fun as they could of been, if that makes sense.

I would say go ahead, if you dont like the class, change before you are to far in to quit. I played through as a warrior and loved it. I guess rouges would be interesting, with the sneak skill.

Alright, guess I'll give some others a try and see which I like the best. It'll be even better since as I try different characters I can also see each of the origins.
Being a mage seems to be pretty smooth play (played the game 50 hours now), once you maxed out a few spells you can do huge damage, the other party members don't even have to do anything besides Morrison that is also a mage. I will play all the reces eventually though as they all have uninique storylines and cutscenes.
The story and character development is a massive part of this game. I would choose whatever you think is fun and stick with it for your first play though. All the classes are viable and the story is entrhalling to the point it would be a waste to start over multiple times to try and find the perfect class like in longer MMO games etc.
Thanks for the suggestions, I'll probably keep the character I have going for awhile
I am Duran, the noble dwarf prince; warrior. Played about 8 hours so far. Funny how the humans make fun of him and are astonished to see him above ground.

I am also Duran, noble dwarf prince;warrior... We have no creativity with names, do we?

It's easier than coming up with a completely new name that you find you hate 15 hours in and having to start over again. Or a face.
Most of the time when I mess up with a face I just wear a helmet.
For classes, mages are the most flexible because a spell is pretty much always usefull while focussing on archery on a rogue would make you rather weak if you decide to go melee later on. Although you could always use console commands to change your talents later.
Melee dex rogue is by far the most broken class, never dies and DPS is insane. Love it. Now doing a 4 melee dex dual dagger run with Zevran, Leliana and me as rogues and Alistair respecced to dual wield.

♥♥♥♥ the holy RPG trinity (tank/dps/healer), time to have some fun. Never liked DnD rules.

General tips:
  • Remember your freaking priorities. Never put a skill/talent/spell point into something you won't use unless it's a stepping stone for getting a better skill/talent/spell.
  • Mages and archers are often your first priorities. Warriors and rogues both are rather dangerous, but they seem like Darkspawn Grunts in comparison to high-level mages and archers. Nothing like your entire party being damaged/killed (and stunned, for archers) by a Chain Lightning or a Scattershot. It also really sucks when that warrior you're focusing on is healed by a distant mage.
  • Try to avoid/be careful of the following:
Revenants: Nothing like having to deal with a bulky warrior-mage hybrid that pulls your ranged attackers away from their position, can do damage to two targets in a single strike, and has an Aura of Weakness so that you can barely get a hit in and it always hits you unless you have high enough attack or defense, respectively. The worst part is they often come with other undead and/or are at boss level. And don't think about trying to do nature or cold damage, but they won't have any of that. At least using the proper strategies can make fights with them easier.
Arcane Horrors: More deadly than the Revenants, but far less resilient. They'll still deal tons of damage with spells like Fireball, Walking Bomb, Spirit Blast, and Winter's Grasp, but at least you can kill them fairly quickly, if not easily.
Ogres: These guys are more annoying than deadly, at least at later levels. They have a tendency to knock you down again and again, but that's only really dangerous when you're alone. Their grab sucks, though.
Templars (if a mage): Oh, so you came into this door wanting some easily kills? Sorry, pal, you're getting nuked by Holy Smite! If you have high enough mental resistance, you'll resist the Holy Smite, but if you don't, tough luck. It's still rather dangerous if you're something other than a mage, but chances are all of the Templars will try to use their Holy Smite on your character so that only s/he dies/takes damage unless you're close enough together. Other than that, they're not too bad, other than being resistant to other Templar's Holy Smites.
Anything with an attack that makes your character helpless: These things can range from deadly to an annoyance. Just kill them before they can overwhelm/grab/whatever you.
I would add more, but I'm lazy.

I often focus my attacks to 1 enemy at a time when possible and just use any skill/spell that is avaiable. I try to use the mages first with an area attack that either deals over time damage or stuns/sleep all the enemies at once and then pick the enemies of 1 by 1. Mages with a deep mana pool are very deadly, only downfall is that some attacks take a long time to launch (like the inferno). I often have with the inferno or fire blast attack that the enemies closed in to my party already before the attack/spell launches and thus causing my party to get hit by the blast as well. And even though I can choose many different party members I always bring along my wardog (so far) as is great as fodder against warriors and othe melee units and can disrupt the archers effectively. I am not even halfway through the game yet so no doubt I will have to come up with better tactics later on :)
level 4 coercion, no matter the class. thats all you need to know.
