One weakness, at first, was the positioning. When you move your troops to a specific position (I got the archer a bonus to hit from high elevation and if he flanked - so i like moving him to elevation and to flank for the most damage), sometimes your troops will still MOVE! ugh
However, if you double click on an area to move it to - you can actually tell them to hold that position. Which is nice.
I will be honest, my first 4 hours or so... I hated the game... almost gave up and asked for a refund from Origin. Now I am in love. I had to get used to the new control and RESEARCH on how to handle my characters. Keep in mind, nothing to do with the story ... just the UI and the auto attack toggle and the lack of true keyboard and mouse support and binding. Now that I am used to it... it is great!
Lastly, DO NOT GET THE DIGITAL DELUXE. After the boss fight you get access to your "blue" weapons and "blue" armor. Within 10 or 15 minutes I got "white" drops that were as good or better than my digital deluxe set. I just replaced my weapon, so I no longer use anything from digital deluxe set. This is opposite of Origin where the armor and weapons from DLC or Mass Effect could last you the entire game.
The magic schools are no better than what we have seen before. Though I am not playing a mage, so can't say other than what I have done iwth my companion characters. There is no healing, but that's fine. There is a universal potion supply (you start with 8). There is no healing between battles, and you need to heal up after. You can carry other potions, including regen postions, 5 per character at first, which also helps with healing.
The play area really IS massive as they boasted. Its absolutely huge. There really are landmarks and stories everywhere, though most of them are of the "get this", "kill that" variety. If you don't take the time to read the text, it is pretty standart MMO stuff. If you let yourself get too into the "side quests" (busywork), the story feels very disjointed and not nearly as focussed as Dragon Age 1 or 2.
The story is pretty good though. The characters are better than I feared, but not as good as I was hoping, at least so far. The dialogue and story is worthy of the name Dragon Age, and that is what I bought the game for, so I am not upset.
The controller on tthe pc version i imagine works the same as on the console version. You have to go back to the main menu and change it to use a controller instead of M+KB and it changes the whole UI. Also, its awsome. You press select to go into tactics mode and it auto pauses the game. You can scroll between party members with up and down on the D pad, issue commands and then either hit select again to go back to action mode or hold down the right trigger. Time only passes when you hold down the trigger. I found it to be a very intuitive control system for a compulsive pauser like myself.
In Tactics mode without a game pad (in DA:I) i felt like i was fighting the camera with the mouse. Im glad i already owned a xbox controller for my pc, otherwise i would have been very upset with buying the game in the first place.
In tactical i control my camera positionwith the keyboard and the angle with the mouse.
It is slightly annoying that they did not implement edgescroll, i agree totally.
The limited zoom out is also annoying, i think they were afraid too much zoom out would take players out of immersion or something.
The action camera works exactly like WoW, move wioth keyboard and look around and steer with mouse, no problems here.
I play on nightmare with tactical combat and pause often and use minimal AI, so it plays like DA:O for me.
I can see why some people who dont like to pause would be annoyed because instead of if-then Ai behaviour modifications, you can only tell them to use an ability, use it MORE or not use it.
No more Wynne 20 line heal macro for optimal auto healing.
One thing that really bothers me so far is that the combat is more "darksouls" like and relies on hit detection 100%, which means you can friendly fire your own guys not only with a mage fireball, but also with melee attacks or arrows. It also means the enemies that are taunted by your tank will still damage your backstabbing rogue because they do starnge swings sometimes that have 360° damage range.
