Origins, Awakening, Golems, and Witch Hunt follow an order in the story. You can't do them in the other way around.
Wouldn't this ruin the story? haha. Though seriously I tried really hard to get into DA2, I even d/l a bunch of mods to make it more like DA:O yet I still couldn't stomach it enough to actually finish it..
DA2 was so bad that it made me shy away completely from DA:I which is a shame because I really loved DA:O
Understanding 1/3 of DAI may (depending on how you think of it) require playing DA2 and its DLC.
Base game -- for Hawke
Legacy -- for the enemy and Wardens
Mark of the Assassin -- for Orlesian politics
It isn't outright essential, but DAI definitely acts as an extension of what is seen in DA2.
Though the world itself in DAI is more of a mix of DAO and DA2. And DA2 story matters less as DAI heads towards the end (Morrigan gets involved, etc).
I recently reinstalled the whole game and decided to not bother with promo items or these auto-reward DLC items.
I'd play the normal campaign through once before doing Leliana's song, as it won't make as much sense without already knowing her backstory.
