I've played both games repeatedly so I have some bearing of what you need to know/what to look out for.
Dragon Age Origins:
The story it can be confusing what’s going on in the plot (for instance, characters will be mentioned multiple times before they actually appear in game). You’ll spend a lot of time in one area and it feels very lengthy at times. This game focuses on the choices you make as a player and in terms of a role-playing game you feel a greater impact of what you’ve done in DA:O.
---------
In Origins you have multiple party members that join you (you choose up to three when you travel) and you gain trust or hatred with them. In Skyrim, you just have a follower that’s just kind of… there… like a pack-mule. Also you are able to romance certain party members that you’ve recruited, again, an example that there's deep character development.
---------
The skill trees are much more in depth than Skyrim and provide more options.
Its much more strategy oriented and you are able to set up an individualized tactic system for your party, this aspect causes many people to say DA:O is very hard.
Because of the strategy aspect, DA:O is ALWAYS in third person combat and character interaction. You are able to fight as your chosen party members in battle. In game, you cannot be your party member to make plot-oriented choices but you are able to personally fight as them in combat or to walk around as them outside of camp. Also if your avatar dies, you won’t necessarily “game over” until everyone in the party passes out. Party members don’t perma-die unless they’ve been killed in a cut scene. So don’t worry too much about friendly fire because they aren’t gone forever.
-------------
Dragon Age has cut-scenes, whereas Skyrim has very little, if not none at all.
Skyrim:
The story has an easier concept to grasp and has a much faster pace.
----------
Skyrim’s customization is more in-depth, in terms of clothing and character (wider variety of races to choose from) options. Even enchanting weapons have more options than in Dragon Age: Origins. But this is because Skyrim is a much newer game in terms of DAO. The way you dress your character is a bit similar, both games have body, feet, hands, head, rings, and necklaces. In Origins you can have belts and you have two ring slots, not just one unlike Skyrim. In Skyrim you are allowed to concoct your own potions from ingredients you find in the world but in DA:O you have to follow strict recipes. You are also unable to craft potions/traps/poisons unless you’ve leveled party members up to a certain point in DA:O.
----------
There is no first person combat in DA:O unlike in skyrim.
----------
There are more fun/silly mods for this game than Dragon Age: Origins. Although, DA:O has a HUGE amount of mods too. Most of them are for appearance and texture tho. There are some cool compainion mods out there tho. I suggest the "1 year with Sten" and "Extra Dog Slot"
You should buy Dragon Age:Origins if you are looking for a good story and the ability to infulence that story. Also, get the complete edition (when/if you do buy it) because it comes with Awakening which makes several improvments of the game (for instance, the games gives you stamina potions now).
I like the Dragon Age series, I own 3 books from it. But I wouldn't suggest this game to someone who has a difficult time with strat games. You'll hear a lot of butt-hurt about Dragon Age 2 too, but that's a completely different post lol. Personally, if I had to choose between playing Dragon Age: Origins or Skyrim, I'd choose Skyrim.
You know....I didn't even realize that this game was just like KOTOR until you said something. Then I realized that KOTOR was made by Bioware. I think I can understand this game a lot more now.
But both well worth playing - both beautiful !
DA:O is a plot driven game, you have multiple small maps and you have to follow a certain path in order to finish the game. Once you finish the main quests the game is over.
Also, you spend so much time searching and installing mods that in the end you've lost the inspiration to actually play the game.
But yeah, the more intelligent and answerable question would be what do these two games have in common.
"Also, you spend so much time searching and installing mods that in the end you've lost the inspiration to actually play the game".
Oh so funny and so true I have done that many a time too oh gawd.
