You call 4 people a party?
With all the characters you recruit, you are limited to only 3 other members. Do you go with the same 3 thruout the entire game or do you match to the situation? I had Alistair, but I had to sideline him for Wynne to go thru the Fade. My character is a dual-wielding slasher, I have Leilani for the lockpicking and Morrigan for the artillery. Oh yeah, I also have Dog, but haven't used him in a while.

There are other people you can get. Sten, Oghren, Shale and Zevran.

***SLIGHT SPOILERS AHEAD***

There is:
-Alistair, Warrior, get him at beginning
-Morrigan, Mage, get her at beginning
-Dog, 'Warrior', get him at beginning
-Leliana, Rogue, pick up at Lothering
-Sten, Warrior, pick up at Lothering
-Zevran, Rogue, pick up during map event after a chapter done
-Wynne, Mage, pick up at Circle Tower
-Oghren, Warrior, pick up at Orzammar
-Shale, 'Warrior', DLC
-(replaces Alistair optionally) Loghain, Warrior, pick up at Landsmeet

Awakenings expansion has its own 6 companions (one of them comes from Origins though), Golems DLC and Witch Hunt DLC also have their own small groups of companions.

~~~
My profile is a Mage, who is pretty direct with its focus on healing and primal and some spirit, with Spirit Healer and Arcane Warrior (though I don't really deal with the latter). So I don't really need a Mage healer, but a tank and lockpicker is nice.
-I use Alistair a LOT. But not always. Tank.
-I want to use Morrigan more, but I really don't care. Maybe in a future game where a male Warden romances her.
-I don't care for Dog TBH. It was cool hearing of a mod where he doesn't take up a whole party slot though. At least I think that's a thing? I forget.
-I use Leliana lots, or at least at first, as my lockpicker rogue. I'm cool with her mostly.
-I use Sten sparingly. I don't enjoy him very much and I already have Alistair as my tank so...
-I've been using Zevran more and more, now that I have his lockpicking upgraded. He may replace the Leliana role by the end (I'm 2/3 through main story).
-I use Wynne sparingly. Not because I don't like her, but because I know I already have my Warden as healer. If I was Rogue or Warrior, I might have used her more.
-Meh, Oghren. I like that one magic-loving dwarf in Orzamaar far more than him. But he's okay. I use him rarely.
-I use Shale lots! Now that I've done the sidequest for it I will probably slow it down, but I love Shale <3
-I probably won't be recruiting Loghain this time.
So I use Alistair, Leliana, Zevran, and Shale the most, I guess.
Morrigan, Dog, Sten, and Oghren, and Wynne the least.
I especially avoid Morrigan and Dog. Dog because I don't want a damn dog filling up my story, and Morrigan just because she isn't fitting in well strategically and narratively for my Warden.
The most typical party is Alistair, Leliana/Zevran, Shale.
there is really no reason to even use morrigan in my opnion. I hardley EVER use her. I use wynne , alistair most of the time reguardless what class I am. , not only because hes a tank and she is a healer but alistair is pretty introcule for alot of coversations through out the game. especially at redcliffe.
( and yes alistair is a great tank if you use tactics correctly, so many people use tactics so wrong)
Nightmare in this game is a joke. very easy to beat the game if you just use tactics correctly.
Story-wise, Morrigan is very important as the game goes on, and forging a romantic or friendly relationship with her may be something you want, since Witch Hunt DLC (the 'finale' of Origins) is so much about her.
Tactics-wise, there is no particular reason to use any character. Tank role can be played by a few. Damage role can be played by pretty much everyone. Healer role can be played by either Morrigan, or Wynne, or you can be the healer yourself, or decide to rely on health poultices.
Lots of people used Morrigan because they played a Warrior or Rogue and didn't like/rejected/killed Wynne.
My "Main" party consists of Shale, Morrigan and Leliana when i play a warrior/rouge and if i play mage i swap out Leliana and Morrigan for Oghren and Zevran.
Morrigan is not that useless, there is gameplay reasons to bring her along even if you don't like her character because she is a mage.
Mages in DA:O have access to tools that can get the group out of quite a lot of sticky situations, most notably their AoE potential,
I wish they included Jowen as the 3rd mage (Blood Mage, where Morrigan was Shapeshifter and Wynne was Spirit Healer) like was originally planned :(
You can have 5 if you have the "add dog" mod to any character class, not just the human noble. And he becomes less useless since he doesn't fill up a slot, and is an excellent ballistic missile to use on mages. Charge, Overwhelm, no more magic spamming ♥♥♥♥♥ in the background mucking up your melee.
I change my squad regulary, so I don't have to hear the same chat the entire time ;p
I tend to use the same characters throughout all my playthrough's
Alister, Morrigan, Oghren, Leliana but only until i get Zevran, this depends on what class i play,
if i play a Warrior then i don't use Oghren, as a Mage i wouldn't use Morrigan and as a Rogue i normally leave out Oghren or Zevran/Leliana
i don't really care for the rest i just find them not as efficients as these
The only one I use 100% of the time regardless of class and spec is Sten. He's just too good from all points of view. He hits hard, dies rarely, is actually funny without trying ( him and Morrigan are almost as funny as Isabela and Aveline ).
Others are situational or just depending on the mood I'm in when I play. I think the least used companion are Oghren and Shale.
Why would you go for Sten over Oghren, Sten only has 1 specialisation, and Oghren has the Dwarf racial ability
it's actually quite funny having Oghren and either Wynne or Morrigan in your party but i do agree that Shale is probably my least used character, never use her on Nightmare, too many AoE skills that damage the party
Sten can have 2 if you use the mod that gives it to him at lvl 7. It was I think just an oversight from Bioware and regardless it's just a personal choice. Sten just fits better in the role of the Warrior while I can't take Oghren seriously, he's just a drunkard.
The title made me think of: "Back in my day, we had six in a party and when you died you were dead." And of coruse, Baldur's Gate could be brutal, but that is what was fun about it. XD
Normally, I have my dog with me at all times, as I find him very handy. It's charge move can really come in handy to take down bosses, even if only for a short time.
Who esle I pick depends on the situation and also who I like as a chracter.
