Logically, each person should have known they were volunteering to participate in a suicide mission. Even if he wasn't joining the wardens, just being a soldier in that war...each person should have known to expect some risk. Jory claimed he didn't want to die for the sake of his wife and child...but if that was the case, why was he there to begin with? He saw no glory in the joining? From playing all the games...up until inquisition..just being with the grey wardens gave you honor and labeled you a hero, whether you deserved it or not. Hence Blackwall in Inquisition.
The way I see it, the joining ..and Duncans actions weeded out the cowardice and selfish. Chances are..even if Duncan hadn't killed him, Jory still would have likely died when the battle went south.
As for the secret of the joining and your player blurting it out to your party...You have to remember that your player is brand new at being a Warden. Even Alistar had little to no experience in fighting darkspawn. With no experienced wardens to teach and guide them...I understand why the option to spread that secret is there.
Besides, you can't keep any secrets at that campsite. Just romance Alistar and listen to the advice everyone gives him in the art of romance ;)
But it's not well known that the mere joining ritual could kill you. Duncan deliberately kept the truth of the risks from them and Jory died because of that. Jory was confident in his skills, and could have survived battle. But the joining is like a coin toss. If he had known about it, he wouldn't have joined.
Not every war is considered a suicide mission. Cailan was doubtful of the blight and thought they'd defeat the darkspawn quickly, an attitude that must have been shared by some.
He did not sacrifice his life to save his family. He was murdered so that the grey wardens could protect their secrets and deceive more people.
As though that makes killing him OK. I don't consider it cowardly or selfish to not risk your life on a 50-50 ritual, just like I don't consider it cowardly to not play russian roulette. I don't consider it cowardly to back out of a deal you were deceived into taking, especially when your life's on the line.
Also your player and Alistair aren't psychopaths.
You know in wars irl they would kill people who tried to run away.
Even if people knew the truth they might still take it, like dwarf noble origin and city elf origin, for the protection being a grey warden offers. And you only need one. It might be possible that by being more open that would actually inspire people more than the myths built around them.
The imprisonment of conscientious objectors is considered a grave injustice, and the death penalty for desertion hasn't been applied in the US since the second world war. Irl leaving the army is not considered to be punishable by death.
Even if you know what you signed up for, which Jory didn't, desertion should not warrant death.
he has to safe guard the ritual secret....
or maby he does have a masive blood lust for jory blood and just says that anyway....
