Dexterity is the thing you want to max as an archer, Cunning and strength aswell but to a lesser extent. Ranger and Bard are what you're going to specialize as when the time comes, Ranger for its boosts and animal spawns, and Bard for its buffs.

The Dragon Age wiki has a page dedicated to Archery specialized characters:

I thought cunning was better for archers cause most of ur damage comes from ur strength stat, which u dont want to stack, but that gets replaced with cunning with the talent lethality.

To optimize an Archer, Duelist + Bard is superior. Ranger is alright, but not really necessary, even when you solo. Assassin is completely useless on account of its talents requiring a melee weapon. Speccing Duelist allows you to have decent aim, even with lackluster dexterity. Cunning works alongside Lethality to give you massive critical hits. Bard also buffs traits. The guide H0t_Air_Buff00n posted is probably the best Archery guide on the entire internet, so you should read that thoroughly to plan. Keep in mind that Rogue archers are the strongest in DA:O, and Warriors are superior in Awakening.

The Ranger specialization isn't bad but there's one glaring issue with it: If a pet lands the killing blow on an enemy, you will not get experience from the kill.

Nathaniel Howe is completely OP i dont think any archer could be superior to him and his hax bow.

archers best spec'd dex/cun make sure you take lethality. shale is best companion for archer specific bonuses. gear wise you want everything you can find with +crit. Archers have some things to take into consideration that deal with Setup/Aim time which you want to minimize as much as possible. Some good guides out there you should read. Its all to easy to gimp your archer.

Spirit Warrior ignores armor and also gives bonuses to attack speed. If you manage to max out your +Spriit Damage, a Warrior outperforms a Rogue by miles.

Video is straight from the guide. Note that Oghren is inferior to properly specced and geared Import Warden, so this is not even the full potential of SW archers.

Archery in general is ridiculously OP in Awakening.
You could probably steamroll entire Awakening on highest difficulty with Tier 1 bow, just bump Dexterity & activate "Accuracy" and go to town.

Im not sure, how it were patched, but after release i was solo facerolling hardest difficulty with bow. Went dext over everything and i ended with crit over 100%...
