Shouldn't take too long until you find more companions.
-There is Alistair
-But also a Qunari warrior you can grab in the 3rd area of the game
-And Shale, who is part of the Stone Prisoner DLC
-And a Dog, who believe it or not can actually tank
-And a Dwarf warrior who you can grab in a later area of the game
In one of the last parts of the game, depending on your actions, you may be able to replace Alistair with another warrior character. But the 4-5 warrior count stays (compared to the 2 mage and 2 rogue companion count). There's 9 companions you'll have by the end of the Origins campaign (10 total), unless you skip, kick out, or disgust any enough to leave.
So if you're going to be the Templar tank and want a diverse team, there are a few options. This is assuming that you are going to be a Templar Tank (Sword and Shield)
1)Keep Alistair in your regular team (personally I don't have a regular team tho). Make him Sword and Shield. Just have fun with two tanks. Not optimal but it tends to fit Alistair's character more imo.
2)Keep Alistair in your regular team but make him more of a DPS, so something like Two Handed Weapons or Archery. No other Warriors in the team though - try for a mage and a rogue usually.
3)Replace Alistair quickly with the Qunari or Dog you meet (or later on Shale, the Dwarf). While you tank, have them focus on damage abilities.
4)Just tank and not worry about having other warriors. Bring 1-2 rogues and 1-2 mages, and make sure at least one of those mages is really focused on healing (or especially is the character with the Spirit Healing specialization).
Personally I'd prefer #2 or #3.
If you're going to be a Damage Warrior (as the Templar specialization is NOT role specific in usefulness), then it is easier. It is quite possible to go Damage Templar and have Alistair stay in your team as a Tank Templar.
