Origin messed up DAO UE game files
I d/l DA 2 off Origin because Steam doesn't have it, and I wanted to play a little before I finished Awakening. I went to play DAO today and got a Steam error message:

"Failed to start game (missing executeable)"

I followed the link. Closed Steam, deleted appcache, restarted computer, and get error again. Shut down Steam and make sure I'm the Admin and the message pops up. How can I fix this so I can finish Awakening and the other DLC? And I mean a fix so I can play the game I've already got going, not creating a fresh install and start from scratch.

Let me guess you have DAO in Origin as well as Steam? I ran into a similar problem before. What happened is Origin spotted the game installed and auto updated it. before you do anything else, Open your Origin app and turn off auto updates.

Now to fix DAO, first go to your documents folder find Bioware>Dragon Age folder and look for the Characters folder (this keeps your charatcers and current saves), copy that and paste it on your desktop so it's easy to find later. uninstall DAO. once you uninstall it go and check that it's completely gone, check the Program files>Steam>Steam apps>Common. make sure Dragon Age Origins UE folder is gone.

Download and install the game again, once the base game is installed you will most likely have to install the dlc as well. To do that you'll need to access the Dragon Age Origin UE folder through steam apps again, once there go to redist folder and click DAUServiceSetup_Steam.

Once everything is in order paste your Charatcers file into your My Documents>Bioware> Dragon Age folder. You should be able to pick up right where you left off.

Uninstalling shouldn't be necessary. Just get Steam to verify the files and that should fix it and redownload the Steam files required.

Also moving the save files from the My Documents folder isn't necessary even if you do uninstall the game as they remain where they are until you manually delete them.

Also disable game auto-updates in Origin to prevent it from happening in the first place.

If he has the game on Origin as well and it updated, verifying on steam does not work, cause Origin hijacks the game files the upsater apps etc. and steam won't recognize them. I tried verify when I was in that position and still got disk read errors and other ♥♥♥♥.

It worked for me when it happened to me, it's worth trying before redownloading the whole game. If it does fail then yes uninstall and re-install.

Just checked and I do have DAO on Origin because it was free. I've only played the Steam verson, not that that matters since Origin can access it regardless. I found out DA 2 won't play, so I uninstalled that and uninstalled Origin since I only had it for that game.

I'll try what you suggested to save my character files and save games, but I have crap luck with computers. If all else fails, I'll just have to replay Awakening to get back where I was.

Followed your instructions and the game works and I have my save files!

Much love. Much wow. Much thanks.
