Take the Heal spell on your own mage, and also get the companion Wynne as she has the Heal spell and a Mass Heal spell. With those spells and also healing potions, it's much easier to keep your party alive. There is some micromanagement needed, however, unless you assign appropriate tactics to each companion.
You can play arcane warrior in at least two different ways. One way is to take just the first Arcane Warrior spell, so that you can wear any sort of armour, but you still fight as a spellcaster. Another way is to pick up the other Arcane Warrior spells and play as a hybrid melee/spellcaster. I prefer the first option, as it doesn't interfere with your ability to cast spells.
That's actually why I never played DA 2. Played the demo for five minutes and the combat put me off. Yeah, I understand it has been changed and improved as people said, but that hacky slashy thing really put me off big time.
