I focus on two rogue skills and stealth first.
- First row up to Coup de Grace.
- Second row up to Lethality.
- Full stealth, when ever available
In the mean time I will take two first assassin talents, when they are available. Third is bugged out and fourth is quite pointless any way - you will get better benefit by using proper armors.
- I will proceed trough the third row of Dual Weapon talents, up to Momentum.
- Second row up to Riposte (relies on Cunning, where rest of the talents rely on strength.)
- I will take a first row to Dual-Weapon Mastery. The effect to use two big weapons is pointless for assassins and rogues, but everything that helps you to keep your stamina high without spending pointless points to it is worth of a talent point.
After that I will move to Archery skills. They will allow me to aid my companions during bigger battles at the end game. I don't really take "assassin" skills from there, but talents to hamper enemies.
I will raise my strength to 16 and gain 4 more points during the game. You don't need more than 20 points of strength to use best light armors available. You could place less there, if you wish to rely on items that give you more stats, but I am giving them to my tank character. It is quite important to keep him alive and able to produce threat.
Majority of points go to Cunning. My secondary skill is Dexterity. I top dexterity to maximum needed by my weapons skills and often leave it there, until I need it for a weapon - I don't recall if I did the last time I played.
I don't spend a lot of points to other character stats. I may place few for more hit points and willpower, but using proper item set is more important for the last one and spending points are away from Cunning and Dexterity.
I will spend 3 skills to Coercion at first. Fourth one is not needed for high Cunning. You could get maximum Coercion without the third one, but that would be in very late in the game.
I spend 1 skill point to Stealing, just to get stealing missions open from Denerim. With full stealth and high cunning, that is all that you need.
4 skills to Combat training.
Rest I divide between Survival (helpful) and Poison Making, according to what I need. Neither is really neded, but they are quite fun. You could also use the trap making instead.
Strengths of this build is that you cover all the basics early in the game. It does make a difference.
Weakness of this build is that you won't have plenty of activated talents before the mid game. If you feel that it is a problem, then move to Momentum earlier than I do.
In any case, rely on basic Leather Armor set for negative Fatigue bonus. Upgrade it by selling and buing it to Bodhan or smith in front of the keep - or just buy better versions when you find one. The basic leather gives you a negative fatigue, which is extremely helpful with Momentum. You can use Wade's better item sets later, when they are available.
This is how I build my assassin, but - as said - it may be tedious for others. I like to cover all the basic first and pay attention to my character's movements. Others may be keen on using more activated talents early in the game, but that will also mean relying more to willpower than massive backstabs and speed you are able to do with momentum. I only take riposte, because it is another stun and allows me to use Coup de Grace directly in front combat, as Dirty Fighting does.
