Are you sure? According to the wiki page, it says you can tell her that you'll use the sword for the battle and return it after. That sounds a bit odd if you can only talk about it post-battle.
It does indeed happen. When you go to return the sword, she tells you to keep the sword out of gratitude and that she thinks it'll be a better idea if you keep it instead of her. You then get the option to pay her for the sword.
Huh, alrighty then. Thank you both for your responses!
Update - I did the battle and talked to them afterward. They never mentioned the sword at all. I could offer to pay for a wagon to take them away, but it seemed like an entirely different tangent. I think the game bugged and didn't think I ever asked about or obtained the sword, which would explain things.
Regardless, I guess the outcome is the same either way.
Right, but I think after talking to the kid and getting the key to the sword from him, telling him I'd talk to his sister about compensation (making it a promise) and getting the family sword, then not having it come up in conversations at all despite sources saying it should, just feels like one of those bugs we all know and love.
You must have not promised Bevin that you're only borrowing the sword for the battle. The option to pay for the sword comes up if you do that.
I talked to Bevin and persuaded him to tell me what he was looking for, and he mentions the sword. I ask about it and if I can do anything for him and his sister in return. He says money would help, and I told him I'd talk to his sister about it, I promise. He gives me the key and runs off, I get the sword, and that's that. No option to talk about it with Kaitlyn, just an unrelated conversation to help them avoid an orphanage.
Did you specifically choose the dialogue that says you're just borrowing the sword? IIRC, there are multiple dialogue options at that point, and only one opens up the option to pay for the sword later on. You actually may have payed for the sword without knowing it. If the amount you pay is above 10 gold or so, Kaitlyn mentions something about not having to worry about Bevyn ending up in an orphanage now.
No, I didn't ask to just borrow it. I just asked about compensation and Bevin said money would be good, and I responded that I'd talk to Kaitlyn later about it.
With you doing everything for them like a good person
Yeah I got the kiss but there was no conversation about the sword, and no, relationships haven't progressed to romance yet lol. Still pretty early in the story.
