Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition

Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition

Can't start the game (Visual C++ Runtime Library error)
I *just* installed Dragon Age: Origin - Ultimate Edition and cannot start it up. No mods.

I'm running on a custom built MSI desktop system (specs can be provided) running Windows 11. Intel Core i9 12900K 16 cores and 64 GB of DDR5 RAM. MSI Gaming Radeon RX 6800 output to 2 4K monitors.

The only thing I tried was following the instructions in "Making DA: Origins LAA (Steam)" (https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=233222451). The DAOrigins.exe wasn't under C:\Program Files (x86) like the instructions said. I tracked it down to the install drive (X: a 2TB M.2 NVME drive) to "X:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Dragon Age Ultimate Edition\bin_ship" and installed the patched .exe there. When I tried to start the game, I got exactly the same result: the Visual C++ Runtime Library error: "This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way...".

Try going to your game install folder's redist folder and run the DXSetup (In the DirectX folder), physx and vcredist exes to install the software on them.

Reason: Sometimes steam misses these or doesn't run them properly during setup.

I ran DXSetup and it exited without any issues.

I ran physx and it uninstalled the software. I ran it again to install the software. I like that toggly simplicity.

I was curious since physx is for NVIDIA and I'm running an AMD Radeon TX 6800. Is there an equivalent physx package for the Radeon?

I then ran the vcredist_x86.exe.

I then started the game and got the same error:

Program: X:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\comm...

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact...

Instead of Physx utilizing your graphics card since you have a AMD GPU it will actually utilize your CPU to make up the difference. "It just works" - Todd Howard

When you did the patched installation of the LAA Patch did you replace the old exe with the one you got from the guide? Just curious, I had a other fella recently be unsure whether or not to actually replace the old exe deleting it in the process.

Besides all that, here are some other things you can try:

1. Make sure a service like OneDrive isn't constantly syncing or backing up your documents folder.

Reason: This can disturb or prevent the game from making and editing files in the Dragon Age folder located in your documents that are needed to run the game.

2. Try going to your documents > BioWare > Dragon Age folder and create a blank txt file. Next open this new text file in notepad or other text editor and go to "File" and "Save As" and select "All Files" in "Save as Type" box and give it the file name "systeminformation.xml" without the quotes.

Reason: Sometimes there is a odd glitch where this file has problems generating properly or at all when you first click play/config. This causes the game to crash due to not being able to read/detect/write info the game needs to before starting.

3. Go into your start menu, and click "Settings". Once the window for "Settings" appears, type "Graphics" if on windows 11 in the "Find a setting" text box, and click the result "Graphic Settings" or "Graphics". Once you are in the window of "Graphic Settings", click the "Browse" if the drop box above "Browse" is labeled "Desktop app", and locate "DAOrigins.exe" in your game install folder/bin_ship. You will see the game now listed below "Browse" where you can also find and click "Options" alongside it. Once the pop-up called "Graphics preference" appears, click on "High performance" and click "Save".

Reason: Despite having your GPU detected by the game it may not actually use it. This ends up making the game not be able to run properly or at all. This forces the game to make use of your device's GPU and correct the issue.

Re: "since you have a AMD GPU it will actually utilize your CPU to make up the difference", I'm glad the Intel Core i9 12900K has 16 cores.

Re: "patched installation of the LAA Patch": yes, I renamed the DAOrigins.exe to "DAOrigins - Original.exe", then dropped the new executable in the same directory and made sure the "permissions" (Windows Security settings). were the same for both files.

Re: "1. Make sure a service like OneDrive isn't constantly syncing...", I've disabled OneDrive as much as I can. There is a lonely 5MB process running in the background but its not signed into anything. If I could uninstall it, I probably would. I'm not a fan of OneDrive unless that's all you're allowed to use in an Enterprise environment.

Re: "2. Try going to your documents > BioWare > Dragon Age folder ... systeminformation.xml", should that file be in the Dragon Age folder or the Settings folder?

I followed your instructions so it exists in the Dragon Age folder. There are 2 other .xml files in the Settings folder (which is why I asked).

I added the SYSTEM and Administrators accounts with full access to the Security tab for this new file.

The file exists and its empty.

At this point, I tried to start the game because if I did all 3, I wouldn't know which fixed the problem (even though 1. wasn't really a change).

The program started all the way up and reminded me to sign into my EA/Bioware account.

So, Fictus22, thank you. I appreciate all of the help you gave me to get the game to start.

Happy gaming yourself!

Yes the systeminformation.xml file was meant to go only in the Dragon Age folder in the same location I mentioned in 2.

No problem tomasthanes I was happy to assist you with your issue! Feel free to post if anything else comes up and I will be happy to assist you once more!
