It's a shame that the only stable way to play this amazing game is the Xbox 360 version -- I just started playing it on my Series X after giving up on PC. It's ugly in comparison but at least it works. Please post here if anyone finds a fix.

Never could get the steam version to even launch but this fix works great so far with EA version -- a few hours playtime and no crash. You just have to do it every time you launch the game
Unfortunately, I've already tried that (even experimented with different cores) and it still crashes! My crashes aren't random, which I think points to a different issue. I know I saw somewhere that there's something you can type into the program code to avoid changing the affinity every time you play. I can't find it again but just letting you know that's out there!
Just want to make sure before I shell out $20 for a game I already have - is my video drive the main issue here? Or can I get that game with a reasonable hope that the patch (or other fixes) will solve my issue?
Update: I uninstalled the Steam version and got the GOG game. It saved my progress so I didn't have to replay, but it still crashed in the same place even after installing the 4 GB patch. I'm chalking this up to a lost cause, unfortunately. Still open to solutions, of course.
or did you have some mods in the past which should be long gone? maybe they left some files when they were removed and now cause the issue. like a texture mod or something.
you can also try deactivating the "story screenshot" feature thingy that takes a picture during story related events (see options -> online). i checked my own mage origin game and a screenshot indeed happens in the dialogue of your crash. maybe that feature is related?
