Origins or Awakening first? Answered Origins predates Awakenings
Game starts fine, never played any of it before. I'm assuming Origins first then Awakening? What is the difference?

Origins tells the story of the 4th blight and Awakenings tells a story after the 4th blight.

10-4, and thanks, Origins it is then.

Yeah if you do origins first you can import you're warden.

And if you play Awakenings first, you will see lots of spoilers :)

Orgins . You get a better feel for the backstory.

do origins and if you chose to let your warden live you can trasnfer that character into awakening since it takes place AFTER origins. Let you know its quite interesting in awakening if you are Female Cousland in origins and you marry alistair then port to awaking with her.

1. Origins campaign (plus Warden's Keep, Stone Prisoner, Return to Ostagar DLCs)
2. Awakening campaign
3. Golems of Amgarrak smaller campaign
4. Witch Hunt smaller campaign

(There is also the Leliana's Song and Darkspawn Chronicles standalone DLC campaigns. I'd do Leliana's Song at the appropriate time during your playthrough of Origins, and Darkspawn Chronicles right after you finish Origins)

Each numbered step can be imported into the next one. So for example, an Origins character can be imported into Golems, but a Golems character can't be imported into Awakening. So I numbered this for 'chronological order'. This means that the whole larger 'Dragon Age' story begins with Origins, and ends with Witch Hunt.

Agreed...

Thanks for the replies. I have enjoyed this game immensely and I've only just made it to landsmeet so far.
I'm running a Dwarf Rogue with Alistaire as tank, Morrigan as DPS and Wynne as main healer. I'll save Leliana's Song for my next playthrough where I'll switch up my helpers in order to get more of their back stories.
I plan to write an excellent thumbs up review for DAO once I do a few playthroughs and make a list of all of the mods I'm using in it.
This is my GOTY.

Great to hear that!

Could I ask you to add that list of your mods to the pinned 'Essential mods' topic as well please?

It is always nice to see what other people prefer to use and that topic is a nice place to find mods if someone is looking for them.

I'd be happy to.
I want to make through at least one full playthrough before I commit to that list as right now I am mainly using suggested fixes and tweaks with the 4g loader and I want to run it as close to vanilla as possible. Aside from that I give in to the unlocking the tactics mod, I think to 25. I couldn't see wasting skill points on tactic slots.
I'll do a better job of crediting the mod authors when I can as they certainly deserve it.

Leliana's Song is a complete standalone where you play as Leliana and two helpers. You really can do it any time. It does unlock a set of armor for the Origins and Awakening campaigns but that's it. You can even play it now.

Good info there.
I think we need a guide as to what all of the DLC contain, and there relevance to the main story, if it can in fact be done without spoilers.

Standalone:

Leliana's Song is really no problem to do at any point, but I guess is best to do after you've talked with Leliana (rogue party member) in the party camp a few times about her history. Because, well, it looks like some details don't match up.. ;)

Darkspawn Chronicles is just a crazy 'what if' thing that isn't actually a part of canon (at least not in any known way). Its a story where you play as the Darkspawn and face a Ferelden without the Warden. Do it after Origins for maximum effect.

~~~
During:
Stone Prisoner is a character DLC so its good to pick them up ASAP during Origins. The character also can play a big part in the end of the Orzammar story chapter, and can unlock a sidequest elsewhere in the Deep Roads.
Warden's Keep is a side DLC that can be done at most points, but might be good to wait until a little later. You get a small base there that has a 'item stash' to store things in, a shopkeeper that sells many of the best gear sets and crafts a special item, and more. Deals with Warden lore.
Return to Ostagar is a callback to a very early location in the game. Best to do late in Origins, or to wait after the Landsmeet chapter in order to bring a special character to it.
~~~

Expansion:

Awakening is a full expansion with a new levelcap, companions, and more. It takes place after all that ^^^ stuff. (If you don't import an Origins Warden Hero of Ferelden character, you play an Orlesian Warden-Commander fresh character, that continues on to Golems and Witch Hunt)

Golems of Amgarrak is also an expansion but is smaller. Takes place after Awakening, and still has a couple different companions.

Witch Hunt is the true (but optional, as it is DLC) conclusion to the original Dragon Age experience, technically taking place after *everything* else. It also has a couple different companions, and deals heavily with Morrigan.
