CPU: i9-13900k
Ram: 32gb 3600mhz
OS: windows 10 pro
game will not launch after hitting play in the launcher.
followed the utilimate edition guide for fixes on steam and the windows 10 crash fix. both forums suggested setting core affinity to CPU0, running game with admin access, verfiy integrity of the game, and reinstall game. no mods installed but i have downloaded them in the paste but to my knowledge i have done a complete wipe and clean install of the game. i cleared the docs folder and the game install folder then reinstalled.
1. Go to your game install folder's redist folder to run DXSetup (In the DirectX folder), physx and vcredist exes to install the software on them.
Reason: Sometimes steam misses these or doesn't run them properly during setup. Installing them through other places may not work for the game due to possibly getting the wrong driver version.
Note: If your curious on how to get to your game's install folder, go to your steam library, right-click "Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition", hover over "Manage" in the little drop menu and click "Browse Local Files".
2. Make sure a service like OneDrive isn't constantly syncing or backing up your documents folder.
Reason: This can disturb or prevent the game from making and editing files in the Dragon Age folder located in your documents that are needed to run the game.
3. Try going to your documents > BioWare > Dragon Age folder and create a blank txt file. Next open this new text file in notepad or other text editor and go to "File" and "Save As" and select "All Files" in "Save as Type" box and give it the file name "systeminformation.xml" without the quotes.
Reason: Sometimes there is a odd glitch where this file has problems generating properly or at all when you first click play/config. This causes the game to crash due to not being able to read/detect/write info the game needs to before starting.
Note: If for something creating one yourself doesn't do the trick, find the same file from another game you may play or program and copy/paste that file in the documents > Bioware > Dragon age folder.
4. Go into your start menu, and click "Settings". Once the window for "Settings" appears, type "Graphic Settings" if on windows 10 or "Graphics" if on windows 11 in the "Find a setting" text box, and click the result "Graphic Settings" or "Graphics". Once you are in the window of "Graphic Settings", click the "Browse" if the drop box above "Browse" is labeled "Desktop app", and locate "DAOrigins.exe" in your game install folder/bin_ship. You will see the game now listed below "Browse" where you can also find and click "Options" alongside it. Once the pop-up called "Graphics preference" appears, click on "High performance" and click "Save".
Reason: Despite having your GPU detected by the game it may not actually use it. This ends up making the game not be able to run properly or at all. This forces the game to make use of your device's GPU and correct the issue.
For those who might of already done the compatibillity, dx9, cpu affinity and running the game in admin mode these are actually not necessary and may actually cause more issues for some. Sometimes they can make a difference but only under certain conditions. You may be one of those that it may not work for so it may be best to undo those changes to the game for best results with the tweaks I mentioned doing.
If you have the steam copy of the game installed when you install and run the ea app it should automatically be seen as a installed game on the ea app. A extra measure you can take when it shows up as a installed game on the ea app you should repair the game through the ea app. You can do so by click the three dot button on the top right corner of the game in the ea app's library and click "Repair" from the little drop down menu.
I tried all 4 of your suggested fixes with no success. Any idea what might work instead?
Sorry to hear that. Could you please provide some info about what your exact issue is with the game?
Right click the Game cover in your Steam Library > Properties.
In the "Launch options" section on the General tab, at the bottom (below "Advanced user may....") copy and paste the following line into the empty field:
-CPUCount:2 -CPUPriority:high
It seems the game has trouble with more than 8 CPU cores
Other things I did
Installed the directx in the games folder
Installed the EA App
changed it to run windowed instead of full screen
But the above is what finally fixed it
