In any case, a tip is to exploit the AI in hard fights, draw aggro with an archer, then move backwards with your entire party, select all, then they will come to you instead which is Always easier. Sometimes you only draw a couple of enemies in, then you can systematically eliminate the enemies without fighting them all at once. I use mods that make the game harder and this is how I deal with the hardest encounters.
The reason your party is doing low damage might be due to injuries? Otherwise I don't know. It is also good to focus fire enemies, because each enemy you kill reduces the enemies sum of all damage. Crowd control is also very important. Another useful tip for non-mages is to first do a normal auto attack, then once that connects with the target you instantly use a talent against the same enemy. That way you can greatly increase your dps because it cancels part of the swing animation after the attack hits, it is especially useful for two handed because of the slow attack speed.
Actually, I wanted to be an archer and somehow I can't get a shot off despite having bolts. Don't know what and how I could do anything wrong there but it seems I found a way to mess that up. I changed to dual weapon.
I only enter fights when at full health. I'm not aware of any status ailments or so.
I had a feeling I missed something silly. I wasn't aware I could mark all party members. I tried to separate some enemies from their pack by running away but my party members didn't come along. :-D
I also noticed in the youtube walkthrough that their armor looks heavy. Don't know how you can get that much money to buy that stuff.
Anyway, separating the pack should do the trick. Many thanks! :-)
Btw, archery is pretty bad in the eraly levels but becomes much stronger later in the game. Scattershot is amazing for example, try to get it early. The armor or weapons you saw from a video might be some mods if I would have guessed. There are ways to make lots of cash early on, but it depends on your Origin, and buying armor and weapons early game is often not worth it since you will be looting better anyway.
Could you tell me how to make money? I assume you mean generally early in the game, right? Before the ritual it seems you can't go on the King's Highway and do other quests.
Thanks again for taking the time to help a noob out. :-)
Just play on "easy" ? I do the same for every replay of this game, the combat has not really aged that well and i honestly just want to experience the story.
Especially since the last third of the game is WAY too combat heavy and i just want to get it over with at that point.
The first fight in the Tower is tough indeed. Im pretty certain you can lure them into the small room where you first enter the tower. From there you can quickly kill the ones coming for you, and if the mage comes you can try to paralyze him with your mage. If you just charge in things will go very bad quickly.
Combat in this game is not for everyone, I personally love it though. I much prefer this to modern more action based combat systems, so I don't agree it has aged poorly, it is just a different combat style.
Well, "aged poorly" is maybe the wrong term. Its very old school, very slow, very methodical.
Its fun but it also can border on tedious. I think the game has a bit too many combat encounters for its own good and usually around the last 20%-30% of the game the combat annoys me more then i having fun with it.
As dumbed down and "arcade like" the combat in DA 2 is, the fact that a fight with 10 enemies does not take 15 minutes with constant pausing and instead is over in like 30 seconds is refreshing to me, especially if i do a complete trilogy replay.
I play RPG mostly for the story and character interactions and combat is always the least interesting aspect to me. So "fast and short" is definitely my preference for encounters.
Even though I personally love the combat in this game, I can agree that late-game can be a bit tedious due to the amount of fighting some section have. I guess it depends on the party a bit, but the beauty of this game is that you can play it close to an action rpg if you set up your tactics right, then minimal pausing is usually required, or you can play it close to a classic isometric rpg where you control are your actions.
Unfortunately since the game is 3D, the isometric camera is pretty bad, especialyl when you are used to the classic games, but in some encounters it can be very useful, but the idea is great though. The speed of combat also depend alot on your build, I agree that combat is slow in general, which I personally really like in a real time combat game, but it does depend alot on your build. If you go dual wielding with dual striking and momentum, your attackspeed and dps is absurd and encounters usually ends quickly for example.
One thing that keeps happening is that a character switches to the other weapon set, which is sometimes no weapon... :-( I'm not doing this actively and have no idea how it happens. It's why I lost some fights and wasn't aware of it.
And now Morrigan gets into close combat fights and I can't seem to figure out why. There is nothing in her tactics that suggests she should do close combat.
Trying to find some guides on tactics, But the ones I'm finding are at level 20+. Can't use those tactics as I don't have those abilities etc.
The dogs in Redcliffe are very though but they are optional and don't have much good loot tbh. Same with the gravestone encounters, they are optional and I suggest doing them when you are higher level if you are struggling.
I would like to give some combat advice but it's hard when I don't know what party and what spells/talents you have access to.
But I may have messed up. In the Magi tower I couldn't beat that purple demon, then I went into the other room and ended up in a dream world. I saved accidentally so I can't go back unless I want to do the whole tower again. That is the last save I have. :-(
In the Mage's Asunder I have no chance against the 5 mages that guard the stairs. I tried spirit form but those mages have some hardhitting spells and I can't seem to isolate any of them either.
