Since he admitted he did murder a family of 8, including children! -- I did not want to give up any party members to have him along. I did go to talk to the Rev. Mother which plus-favored me with Leliana anyway, but I agreed with the Rev. Mother that he should not be released especially since the Farmer had saved his life out of kindness and fed him, helped him, and "he repaid that kindness with murdering him, his family; even his children". Only one small child was able to hide and saw the whole horror and lived to tell. The killer admits it himself and says his only absolution will be to forfiet his own life. He is racist againt all others not of his kind, and full of hate; unable to change by his account. He would not even accept food from an elf (me), so i left him to it. I donated some coin to the chantry and was no worse from wear, though the quest will remain right there in case you do want to go back and add him to your party. He is just one of the characters you can pick up as a party-member, but frankly I did not want a child-kiling betrayer anyway. LOL

This isn't Baldur's Gate with a large supply of party members to replace the ones that went SQUICHK when an ogre looked at them funny.

And this isn't Baldur's Gate where party NPCs calmly wait for you to return when you decide you want them.

Sten dies when the Darkspawn overrun Lothering which is shortly after you leave, and there is nobody that actually replaces him.

True, you don't need him, but it doesn't hurt to have him, either. And as a Grey Warden, you need all the help you can get, even if it's from repentant child killers who went into a berserk rage due to waking up in a strange location missing an important item that they can never return home without.

Doesnt Oghren replace him as a two-handed weapon user?

sure, but depending on what order you do things in, Oghren might come in pretty late. I missed Sten and didn't do Orzammar until after I did the circle quests, which meant I didn't have a two-handed warrior for a lot of the game. Not a huge deal, but it's handy to have two warriors at times.

By replaces him, I mean his slot in the roster.

You lose him, you're permanently down a party member, a slot that'll always be empty.

It's not like Baldur's Gate where there's a lot of redundancy due to being able to lose party members to random encounters.

And if you have a mod that lets you actually PICK a first specialization for Sten (seriously wtf Bioware - as far as I'm concerned this is a glaring oversight on their part) then he's also the only party member you get that you can fully decide his specializations on.

(Though to be honest, it feels like he should have been a Reaver to begin with, as that's one of the few specializations that doesn't have a party member representation - and oddly the lore surrounding Qunari might agree with this)

Eh, no, there's plenty of party-members to fill his role and slot.

You only get Oghren to fill that role, unless your warden is two-handed or you try and overhaul Alistair entriely

you have the dog. you have alistair, you have ogrhen. you have shale. I'm not sure your point of 'nobody replaces him'

you mean nobody will equip two-handed weapons without sten until oghren? .. so? thats OCD talking. Serious RPG OCD.

I don't understand your thinking? Sten is your first opportunity to get a two-handed warrior who is /built to be a two-handed warrior/, rather than just a warrior in general. It's not completionist, it's just that he's your best option at that stage of the game?

Not sure about the donating being needed or not. I usually do because 10 silvers is not really that much anyway, but it does really help if you have leliana with you when you go ask.

Oh and make sure she is still wearing the chantry robes that she enters your party with. The revered mother seems angry with her if she shows up not in uniform.
