This isn't Baldur's Gate with a large supply of party members to replace the ones that went SQUICHK when an ogre looked at them funny.
And this isn't Baldur's Gate where party NPCs calmly wait for you to return when you decide you want them.
Sten dies when the Darkspawn overrun Lothering which is shortly after you leave, and there is nobody that actually replaces him.
True, you don't need him, but it doesn't hurt to have him, either. And as a Grey Warden, you need all the help you can get, even if it's from repentant child killers who went into a berserk rage due to waking up in a strange location missing an important item that they can never return home without.
You lose him, you're permanently down a party member, a slot that'll always be empty.
It's not like Baldur's Gate where there's a lot of redundancy due to being able to lose party members to random encounters.
And if you have a mod that lets you actually PICK a first specialization for Sten (seriously wtf Bioware - as far as I'm concerned this is a glaring oversight on their part) then he's also the only party member you get that you can fully decide his specializations on.
(Though to be honest, it feels like he should have been a Reaver to begin with, as that's one of the few specializations that doesn't have a party member representation - and oddly the lore surrounding Qunari might agree with this)
Eh, no, there's plenty of party-members to fill his role and slot.
You only get Oghren to fill that role, unless your warden is two-handed or you try and overhaul Alistair entriely
you mean nobody will equip two-handed weapons without sten until oghren? .. so? thats OCD talking. Serious RPG OCD.
Not sure about the donating being needed or not. I usually do because 10 silvers is not really that much anyway, but it does really help if you have leliana with you when you go ask.
Oh and make sure she is still wearing the chantry robes that she enters your party with. The revered mother seems angry with her if she shows up not in uniform.
