How the heck do I save sten?

You need to go to the Chantry after speaking to him and ask the Revered Mother to give you the key and release Sten into your service. Having Leliana in your party helps but she isn't required.

Discussion with Sten points to Revered Mother, when you talk about releasing him from the cage. With DA:O, discussions tell as much than entries. Sometimes even more.

In case you cant convince her bring Leliana around she will vouch for you and the revered Mother will hand you the key :)

Threatening the revered mother works well, although some of your party members may not be happy about it. Screw them.

just be honest and ask her to release her to your custody with leliana in your party, you will get + points with Leliana if you go this route.

I'm actually legitimately asking the question. Their confusion might make more sense with an explanation.

Even if it's a bad gaming habit, addressing it can help them become better.

The tithe you paid will affect in to diffuclty level to Persuade her. This does not have any negative effects. If Leliana is in the party, then she will gane +2 <3

You can also intimidate her, but this will get both Alistair (-13 <3) and Leliana (-15 <3) to dislike you.

Having Leliana in your party and just asking will cause Revered Mother to give keys without further imput from player or their skills.

Persuade relies on your skill levels in Coercion and Cunning.
Intimidation relies on your skill levels in Coercion and Strength.

I believe you can also just get leliana to pick the lock on the cage.
