Doesn't help

Make sure you recruit the companions in Lothering because you won't get another chance to do so after completing a story quest. It would also help to know which class you plan on using (mage, rogue, warrior?). After the first playthrough, I would recommend installing the skip the fade mod (since it can be kind of a drag but you should have the experience once).

First, do not listen to people that tell you to install mods.

Also, forget about any ideal builds that you have to do, its nonsense - just stick to one combat style on each character.

Now some basic tips:
- Mage in a party is a must, you will need the healing.
- Rogues are much better in melee if they can backstab. They are also required to open locked chests and remove traps, but locked chest only contain generic items and sone coins (no uniques or quest objects) and traps can be just ignored, although you do get extra XP for removing them.
- Any warrior can tank, thanks to the taunt skill.
- Armor directly reduces incoming damage by flat amount, but the heavier the armor, the bigger the stamina penalty. Consider using lighter armor.
- You can increase your inventory limit by buying extra bags at some shops. Do not miss the opportunity to buy such a bag in Ostagar (war camp) before going to the Wilds and another one after finishing the quests there (your first party play).
- Some spells are OP, some are weak. Avoid spells like blizzard and inferno (AoE DoT), embrace the crowd-control spells (including fireball).

Only thing I would say is Mage is easy mode if you wanna just coast through the game and enjoy the story. Enjoy it it's a good one

Don't try to look up information/how to get the most approval points/ect! It so much more satisfying playing through the first time genuinely thinking about how your character would handle situations. Also explore combat strategies & item usage, but don't ever feel pressured to use them. I hope you like it! It's honestly one of my absolute favorites.

Beware the swooping.
Alistair is THE tank you want to have. But really, if you set the game to a comfortable difficulty, you will have a much better time with the Role-playing aspect of the game.
It shouldn't be about min\maxing the first time through, but delving into the great depth of lore that this universe has to offer.

Thanks

Id finished this game more then 20times.

If i can recomend something, do this:

Choose race, skills, attributes, weapons, class, whatever you like. Dont care what other people telling you. Choose only what you like.

Choose companion which you like.

Choose nightmare difficulty. Dont be scared by name "nightmare". Actualy it is normal difficulty. Other difficulties are extremly easy, and you ll get incredibly bored by enemies instantly dying.

If you will start love this game, there is warning for you. There is no other game like this.

Never play Dragon Age Awakening, Dragon Age II, Dragon Age Inqusition. They fraud.

Small tips:

Try win combats without use healing potions and without healing spells. It makes you dangerous strategist.

Always have atleast few healing potions in bags for every companion. There is few battles which are unavoidable and very hard. Freezing bomb is handy too.

The strongest and the most funny ability in game is skill, which allow you to use more tactic slots.

There is NO need for any specific class to have in party. You dont need to have mage. You dont need have fighter. You dont need to have rogue. Just choose companions you like.

There is no such thing as tank/dps/healer. Forget this stupid scheme and you will be greatly rewarded

Buy all backpacks you find. It is only thing must to have in game.

Dont use mods, they all fraud.

Dont do this few things.

Dont play dual wield mage.
Dont play twohanded sword/mace mage.
Dont play twohanded sword/mace rogue.
Dont play shield and sword rogue.
Dont raise Magic stat for non-mage characters.
Its because those above few combinations not works.

So, your first playthrough, when you had no idea about the game, was on nightmare and it was "normal"? I went normal -> hard -> nightmare (could have skipped the hard one though) and I dont believe it would be wise to start on nightmare. On the first playthrough, you have no access to items from some DLC, no unlocked specialisations (which is quite impactful), and if you play it like I did, you might even lose some party members ((mini-spoiler) I killed W. when I met her as she argued with M. too much, and I also lost L. as she couldnt take some of my actions).

I hope you're joking ... Even playing on normal difficulty, I have a little bit of trouble here and there (I don't really use an offensive mage - maybe that's why lol). But again, using nightmare as a first difficulty? Nah, that's kinda ridiculous lol. I'd say normal is a good pick. That way you can also focus on the story and don't have to worry too much about 'ruining' your char/party.

Really the only part that I'm having trouble with is the some of the party controls like how to get them to attack a target because sometimes they just stand where I was before, and the combat is a little confusing at first.
