Fort Drakon Vs. Fighting Ser Cauthrien
I played this game way back when it first released. I recall back then there was a reason to be captured and go to Fort Drakon, but I just played through the area and there wasn't anything essential there. Is there any reason (other than having Dog rescue you) to go to Fort Drakon as opposed to fighting Ser Cauthrien?

you end up with more experience that way. Fighting Sir Cauthrien is generally acknowledged as very very difficult a fight to win when you first encounter her rescuing the princess, so it's just a bragging rights reward more then anything.

Thanks for the answer. I never had much trouble with Cauthrien, once you either kill her support or lead her away from them, she doesn't pose much of a problem as long as you have a high defense character to tank her. I found Ignacio put up more of a fight.

^ rofl try soloing her on nightmare... im not sure if shes tougher or whats his face... mr. hard to find op closet boss guy. need like a gilian defense to avoid her cheese.

I've soloed her on nightmare before with a rogue and a mage. 150+ defense drops her hit rate low enough to beat her.

Going to Fort Drakon leads to the possibility of seeing Leliana and Morrigan dressed in the robes of a Chantry lay priest when they rescue you. Witnessing Morrigan, an avowed apostate who doesn't even believe in the Maker, try to bluff her way past the guards is hilarious.

ya it better to be captured for story bits, character development, and not being a ♥♥♥♥ and killing a girl that is just a bit to stubborn with love/respect.

It better to not if you want to brag for killing a harder fight and if you want to be doing it for your roleplay reason.

Doesn't she also drop a cool sword if you take her out?

She drops the Summer Sword when you kill her. I suppose it's an okay sword (it has knockback on hit), but it's not as good as Starfang, the Butterfly Sword or Ageless. You can still get it from her if you beat her at the Landsmeet though (and she's weaker there).

However, you can get two of them. If you beat her at Howe's Estate you can pick the first one, then you let her peons kill you and you end up in Fort Drakon. Then when you go to the Landsmeet, you can fight her again and pick up a second Summer Sword.
