Dragon Age: Origins - Ultimate Edition

Won't recognize video card on a Win 10 laptop
So after applying the LAA 4gb patch, enabling WinXP SP3 compatibility mode, and setting the affinity to one core only, I've finally got DA:O UE to run in a semistable fashion.

BUT, it still refuses to realize that my laptop (a brand-new HP Omen with Geforce GTX 1050 Ti) does in fact have a dedicated graphics card. The configuration utility only ever reports that the system has the crappy integrated Intel graphics and 1gb of VRAM, which is obviously nowhere near the truth.

I know that the drivers are all up-to-date, and I've tried fiddling with the Nvidia control panel in such a way that both the config and the game itself should only use the dedicated graphics card - and still nothing.

Is there any way to fix this?

This machine can run much never, much more gorgeous-looking games just fine, but my wife's still reduced to playing her favourite RPG with potato graphics.

Hi am_cruiser, this is ZDuke17, and I will try my best to help you. If the game seems to use the integrated intel graphics, lets give it no option to do so. We'll be disabling the integrated intel graphics so the game, as well as your laptop, has no choice but to use the 1050 Ti. There are a variety of ways going into this, but we will start with seeing if we can do this via Device Manager.

Note: If you know the other ways in opening Device Manager go ahead.

Open up your start menu by clicking the windows icon on your taskbar, click "search programs and files" text box, type Device Manager, and press enter. Once the window for Device Manager opens, locate "Display Adapters", click the arrow beside it to bring down a list, right click the intel option, and click "Disable".

If the problem still persists after doing so, let me know, and we will try something else. Just the same if you are unable to disable it via Device Manager.

Thanks for your quick reply ZDuke17. I could do that but, is that really the first option? It seems a little extreme, and makes me a tad uncomfortable, as I'm sure you'll understand. Having a brand-new laptop and all.

I understand completely the hesistation to do so, and that is quite alright. Most laptops these days can prove hefty to the bank account surely, it'd be unfortunate to somehow bring "ruin"
to such an investment. No harm would come of your investment though I assure you. You could always enable the integrated graphics at any moment via System BIOS or Safe Mode, which I'll instruct on how to do so if need be.

I will gladly provide an option of a few more none extreme methods. Here is one of the options, I listed it into 4 segments. Let me if you have any questions or in need of clarification.

1. Go into your start menu, and click "PC Settings". Once the window for "PC Settings" or "Windows Settings" appears, type "Graphic Settings" in the "Find a setting" text box, and click the result "Graphic Settings".

2. Once you are in the window of "Graphic Settings", click the "Browse" if the drop box above "Browse" is labeled "Classic app", and locate "DAOrigins.exe" in your game install folder/bin_ship.

3. You will see the game now listed below "Browse", click the game, make sure it has an address simillar to "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Dragon Age Ultimate Edition\bin_ship" and click "Options".

4. Once in the "Options" or "Graphics specifications" which should show your gpu under "High Performance", click "High performance", and click "Save".

If this one doesn't solve your issue, we will try something else.

A quick question though, when you used the NVIDIA Control Panel, did you apply the gpu change to either in global settings or program settings with Dragon Age: Origins (daorigins.exe) selected? Apologies if you had already answered the question with your discussion intro, but just wanted to be sure.

Thanks for understanding, and for further ideas too. I'll try the thing with Windows settings later today if I have time - I'll let you know how it turns out.

I applies the gpu change in Nvidia Control Panel for both, that is, global settings and daorigins.exe.

I usually get this similar problem after Windows 10, GeForce Experience or Steam does some updates. Installing the game in Origin and using it's game repair tool is time consuming so i found another trick.

I left clicked DAOrigins.exe, then chose option "Use Graphic Processing?" (i am trying to translate it from Finnish version, sorry!), then below that you get an option "Integrated Graphic?" and that allowed me to launch the game with the graphic settings i use.

Don't normally reply to old threads, but this fixed it for me after an hour of messing around with options and EA support telling me to rewrite code. Thanks for getting me a work around for this older game.

Replying for anybody looking for a solution in 2023/2024:

"Open up your start menu by clicking the windows icon on your taskbar, click "search programs and files" text box, type Device Manager, and press enter. Once the window for Device Manager opens, locate "Display Adapters", click the arrow beside it to bring down a list, right click the intel option, and click "Disable"."

This resolved the issue - I tried to force my RTX 3070 via the config menu AND via Windows 11 as well as running the game via all sorts of compatibility settings but until I disabled the native GPU nothing worked.

Sorry to comment this after so many years but I would need help if possible, like others when I try to launch the game it show error message that say ''no supported video card detected'' I was checking for hours for a solution in different post in steam, reddit and ea support page, people say to run the game in compatibility mode, to change the resolution in the daoconfiguration.exe, to run the game in fullscreen desable, but nothing works. The only thing that work for me was to disable de integrated graphics card in device manager like you said, so for what I can tell that is a way to force the program to use the (in my case) nvidia rtx graphic card, but I'm concerned that disabling entirely the intel graphic card can cause some problem in my laptop even if i can just disable the integrated one when I've to play dao and re anable it when I'm done. Also I've see that in the daoconfiguration.exe there is an option to change the graphic card from intagrated intel to nvidia geforce rtx, the problem is that if I change that option it say that it dosen't recognize a screen anymore so the change don't get saved. I was wondering if ther was a way to force dao to use the nvidia gpu whitout the necessity to disable the integrated one. I've already tried to go in graphics settings and make dao run in high performance but that has not change a thing.
