Might vs Magic in another form
Its what suits your style
Mage in my opinion is more tactical and you can mix runes and spells to create unique effects which adds another layer of gameplay rather than spamming threaten/shield bash etc in each encounter, only negative is you need to wear skirts the entire game..
On the other hand choosing the Templars is the "morally evil" choice. Wynne will not join you and you have to kill everyone up there. More Experience at the cost of a healer. In the endgame you get (if I recall correctly) 12 Templars, which are anti-magic knights. THey have heavy armor and use Holy Smites which can really hurt the darkspawn mages.
