How many people use trap making? thinking of using it
Hear me out, I was thinking of using it for a rogue and placing traps around the battlefield before i engage in open combat at key spots.

Anybody know how well it would work?

It can work. You place them somewhere and then kite the enemies to that location.

That said I never really bothered with them. Unless you plan to play on nightmare I dont think its worth the hassle (and even then its not like it's required , just a tool that can be used if you want)

Just go dual wield and backstab everything to death while the rest of the party keeps them busy

Was going to start a dalish elf archer and use traps as to me it fits them. i'll give it a try and let you know how it goes if you like.

Sure, I havent done my yearly playthrough yet so I wouldnt mind a change of gameplay( I literally play this game every year give or take a few months).

Laying traps can be useful but really only if you know in advance what's beyond the next door, so to speak. I spent a lot of time and effort making and using traps on my first play-thru only to realize that it was a wasted effort 98% of the time. I've never bothered since.

I give my Rogue several levels of the trap-making skill so he or she can detect traps before the group wades into them accidentally. IMO, that's all the skill is really good for.

All true, I wanted to try to make use of trap making, but the more i think about the build i was going to try (try to max stealth quickly then lay traps) but then i thought "i'll need to learn the game way more then i have"

It can be fun to use them or roleplay reason, but ya as other said they overall not really that helpful/useful at least in the way of being needed or contribute a large amount.

I have used them in a few playthroughs for those reasons, but since you have to go out of your way to basically have team hold somewhere further back, then lure with 1 person, hope enemy doesn't stun/holdlock that 1 person and also do run all the way to where traps are just not really worth it especially since ... you can just have mage simply cast a blizzard or w/e ( spells can even be cast behind closed doors) I just stopped doing it.

In certain fights they can be straight OP (like place enough of them to 1 shot a boss type OP) but those fights are few and far between, so very situation.

As others have said, they're not really worth the hassle, but there's no reason you can't try them out anyway. Try different things and have fun, I say. I would also say that I found them quite useful in the Golems of Amgarrak DLC, because you can switch the golems on or off in some areas. Have your rogue stealth into a room with inanimate golems, cover the floor with traps, and then sneak out, turning on the golems on your way. Then chuckle to yourself as the golems lumber into trap after trap as your mage spams AoE spells on the hapless chumps. It might take a few tries, as sometimes the golems catch you before you can escape, which is basically instant death. Make sure you save right before attempting!
Anyway, good luck and let us know how it goes.

Going to start this run later today or tomorrow, i took a quick look at some traps with one of my other saves (first 4 you get) and noticed there is friendly fire with a few of them, i'll need to plan ahead for sure.

Sorry to bump this back to the top, But i tried trap making for a few and I feel like i should just use a mage instead. With a mage you can use magic from far away while with traps you'll need to plan before hand and use stealth so much or know when there's a good spot to use traps and lure everything back, I'll try this again once i fully beat the dlc (400 hours and only played two dlc well 3 but could not beat it due to a mod)

For dlc assume you know this but just in case since you said 2-3played

morrigan is after game and only if you would do it.

leliana whenever

darkspawn (should be after main game as it a what if you never existed and alistar had to do it all and play as darkspawn obviously)

golems+awakening after main

(all others can be done whenever in game)

Also tip for traps just put behind doors then have party hang far enough back
(like 1 the only times I fairly often used them were the gangs in main city indoor locations)->
though again a mage can just cast behind the door but you can combo this if want or just for fun stick to traps.

The very first character I made many years ago was focused on traps. They're really underwhelming, but make great fun in how you find yourself planning ahead. Naturally, you always get caught by bosses if you're trying to sneak around before the fight and lay traps because a cut scene starts. However, if you're the kind of person to punch the mother and save humanity from the risk of a demon, then setting many pointless traps is highly recommended for the comedy of errors effect. I always liked to imagine the disappointment in my companions as they saw a professional adventurer more inept at trap setting than a small boy left home alone.

Traps can be useful in certain situations, (for example, when you are helping the militia during the fight at Redcliff [against the dead]) but usually aren't worth the effort. Poison-making, on the other hand is required to use the various grenades, which are always useful for non-mages, and typically have a better AoE than the traps.
