There are a number of progressively harder side quests.
And you need to go there to restock and get info
In fact you will be hopping in and out of the "Big D" all of the time
And then you can go of and do the three main quests in any order (depending on your needs and Char type and what level your at you may choose one as a better one to do first)
Hope this helps
The 'best' or 'easiest' way to do the game is:
Origin
Ostagar
Lothering
Redcliff Village (until you get asked to go to the castle via secret way - stop there)
Circle Tower (You need mages to do Redcliff castle best)
Redcliff Castle
DLC areas - Return to Ostagar, Warden Keep, Shale
Brecillian Forest
Orzammar
Haven - Sacred Urn
Endgame
Though I sometimes do Orzammar after Circle to get the 'last companion', but do take note that Orzammar is quite hard, esp the boss battles.
My original plan was to do Redcliffe, Circle Tower, Brecillian Forest, Orzammar, I wasn't sure how to work in the DLC places so, thank you for that!
I've had honestly lots of fun just running around Lothering and such doing small quests, so backtracking isn't much an issue to me.
