That's pretty good reason for it.
Also, it gave developers more to work with, for further chapters of the story.
I guess this can be somewhat explained if your Warden never gave Morrigan the Grimorie or if you've romanced her. I haven't played the Witch Hunt DLC yet , hopefully that explains the ritual a little better.
Sorry for the necro but I just beat the game and wanted to chime in on ths.
I think the first reply I made explains "why" pretty much. She means to be a mother of a child, who has a soul of a god.
That is quite a good postion for a mage to be.
-Having a child with the soul of an old god means she can mold and control a being of god like power to her goals (one of which is protecting herself from her mother)
-She wants to preserve magic of the "Ancient World"
later she comes to view the baby as her actual child and treats him as such (shown in inquisition)
I think many, to the point of obsession, want Morrigan to be a 'tsundere' who loves you forever more - someone who acts arrogant and individual, but whose heart melts at the sight of your amazingness and reveals their emotional side to you.
While she does fall in love with you (all a girl needs is jewellery!), she's ultimately still a selfish sadist and witch. She doesn't understand her feelings for you, but they don't change her. She still wouldn't take a bullet for you. She'd just say "Tis a strange thing to expect someone to sacrifice themselves for you. One of us would still be dead. Why should you be the one who's strolling around living and not I? Tis a little redundant."
She was oddly bad at charming you into impregnating her though. Just jumps you with "I want a demon baby and then to leave you and raise it in secret and you'll never see it or me again, and I'm not going into detail about why". My, what a convincing argument, how about HELL NO WTF?
