Plasma Cutter is your go-to support weapon.
Force Gun against crowds (and Chapter 7 elevator)
Flamethrower is very ammo-effecient and it stuns enemies
Contact Beam for final bosses and durable targets like Brutes
If you are starting off fresh on Zealot/Hardcore, Ripper is a poor man weapon for the early part of the game. Think of it as a chainsaw. When I was playing this on x360 with a pad, this was easier to use over the Plasma Cutter.
Contact Beam alt fire is a no-brainer and the fastest final boss killer.
Pulse Rifle if you want an impact grenade, Line Gun if you are used to the space shotgun and alt-fire is a timed grenade though Line Gun primary-fire loses its effectiveness on Zealot.
Alternatively, Detonator if you already know where the morphs are gonna pop out from.
