is the contact beam good?
im going to do a hard core run soon , and i've seen many people praise the contact beam and how good it is - now im gonna be honest i havent played with it that much if at all in all my 100 hours so i may be wrong but I think the weapon isn't good because
1. four THOUSAND credits for a low amount of ammunition ( thats very expensive - javelin gun is 400 credits for 2 spears that can do explosive AoE damage )
2. slow primary fire
3. slow secondary

The game only drops ammo for whatever weapons you are carrying. So heres a tip: put away whatever weapons you don't want ammo for. Into your storage. That way the game ONLY drops ammo for whatever weapon you carry with you. The contact beam is fun to use.

Contact beam is your best weapon for late game.

Fully upgraded, the secondary kills and stasis everything around you. Even if the animation is slow, enemies can't interrupt it. For the last couple of chapters where the game throws everything at you, this really help. For the last boss too as you can use secondary on the pack primary on the Nicole/ the core

Usually I carry it but rarely use it just so I can stack ammunition for later.

It's very good against the black variant necromorphs and brutes. It can one shot Nicole in the final boss and two shot the marker in the final boss. Also if you find too much contact ammo, that's fine because it's the most valuable ammo in the game and you can sell it for lots of credits.

One trick pony: brute slaying.
But, it can be great with stasis infused alt fire and appropiate handling.

^what everyone said

Haven't played this game in years, to be quite honest with you!!! But with that said, I DO remember the Contact Beam being the best weapon in the game once it's fully upgraded, as (like the one guy above already mentioned) the alternate-fire mode will stasis enemies that are unlucky enough to be caught in the vicinity.

Is my game bugged or something? I've seen other people say that the game only drops ammo for carried weapons, but I'm on chapter 2 and almost out of plasma and line gun ammo because the enemies dropped ripper, flame, and contact beam ammo

Same here. Only carrying the plasma cutter but I'm getting ammo for everything else.
