Advantage of Mercenaries

Tried searching through the manual - why would I want to hire mercenaries rather than recruiting units? Other than avoiding the cost in war supplies.

Do mercenaries reinforce from the recruitment pool of a nation? Or at all? Have avoided using them thus far thinking I'd be better off just recruiting my own units since I can generally afford the war supplies.
