The dev basically set out to answer the question of what space warfare would be like, instead of just theory-crafting around pet ideas, and while there are some inaccuracies and some things that would never be acceptable in real life despite being technically feasible (player-made nuclear reactors are literally a few K from meltdown to maximise performance, for example) it answers the question quite effectively.
And for those times when you want to go more speculative sci-fi, black box modules allow you to replicate those elements.
The dev still exists, but is working on a new game at the moment. No idea if any future updates for this game are planned.
If that sounds appealing, definitely get the game (there's always the 2-hour refund window). If the thought of occasionally reading a science textbook makes you want to curl up and die, you probably should give this game a pass.
There's only one major bug I know of (and it's dead simple to build your missiles to simply not trigger it). There are practically no build limits of any kind - game absolutely WILL let you field a ridiculous number of ships/drones/missiles/etc., and the game WILL run slow if you push it hard enough. This isn't Spore, and there are very few guard-rails in place to force you to make designs that "run well" or "aren't completely bat-sh!t insane".
Once I unlocked custom module design, I fell in so deep that I still haven't gotten around to finishing the campaign, just because I've apparently got some kind of obsession with making the smallest, cheapest, most-deadly-per-kg drones in the galaxy.
I wouldn't call it 100% abandoned. The dev is currently working on another passion project of theirs, but it seems like they still pay attention to the CDE discord and are taking notes regarding fixes and improvements. No idea if/when that'll come to something, but it's worth knowing.
All we know for sure is that the last thing he said regarding COADE is "The next patch will drop when I’m no longer busy with MegaFactory Titan".
