Unlocking factions?
I beat the game as Brutii defeating Scythia, Pontus, Greeks, Macedonia and Thrace, but didn't unlock half of them, only the Greek faction from those listed. How exactly do you unlock a specific faction, I thought you unlock them upon destroying one?

Some factions, such as the Greeks, will be playable once you conquer them. Others, such as Macedon, can't be played as in the campaign unless you mess with the game files.

If you win at least the short campaign you will be able to unlock nearly all (if not all) of the rest of the nations (at least all of the playable nations). I beat the short campaign as the Julii and that unlocked all the playable nations for me, even though I had not faced many of them in combat yet.

Normally, only certain factions can be unlocked. However, the other factions can easily be unlocked by editing the text files.

I won a short campaign as the Scipio and unlocked Greece, Gaul, Germania, Britannia, Egypt, Carthage, Parthia, Pontus and Dacia. Woo!

This is why you always have to make a back up of the file before you edit it, if you mess up you just place the old file back, no harm done.

So... you can unlock 'nonplayable' factions by destroying them?

You just cut the factions from "unlockable" and paste them into the "playable" section in the desc_strat file, it's not like some crazy hack job.

Certain non-playable factions can be moved in there.. in fact I think all of them except for "slave" will work. Slave just crashes the game if you select the faction iirc.

This game has been out almost 10 years, it has so many mod resources that playing the basic game just feels weird anymore.

Actually it's possible to play as the rebels, I've added them on my list o' factions and the game doesn't crash for me. It's actually quite the challenge.
