Rome: Total War

Rome: Total War

How to get them to breed!
I have this problem in every game : in late game my family stagnates (no new marriages, births or man of the moment) resulting in my whole family (often of over 50 members) aging and en-masse dieing..

in early game my family is growing just fine.
every married couple, both below 50, with less than 4 kids, has a change to get kids.

Some will get no kids, some will get 3 or 4, but on average they get just a little over 2.5 kids, about 1.5 girl, and 1.0 boy.

this means even in early game for every 2 generals, you only get 1 male offspring.

however those 1,5 girls do invite marriages, and hence replace the rest.
not all girls are able to find a mate however, some are bound to become strange cat-ladies;)

so by natural births + marriages your family about refreshes itself, but does not increase in size.
and thats just fine..

but as your family grows problems arise.. for starters those marriages.. it seems that the change for A marriage is per turn, not per wife. so as you have a larger family (with more woman staying single) you'll will have more of them stay single, or marry at a later age, and have to accept older males marrying into your family as well.

And as they marry older, they have less productive years left, dropping birth rates into the negative..

(this would be the first problem that would need to be fixed, how to allow for multiple marriage proposals per turn, to circumvent this problem?)

But this is not the only problem, as there are ways to increase your family for real :
by either get man of the moment, or get the random, adopt into family event.
(however both those events seem to be limited, you get about 5 of each of them in early game, and never again will get them.

(this would be the second problem that would need to be fixed, I'd say that ANY heroic battle done with an army that has no general, should generate a new man-of-the-moment, how to do that?)
Likewise the change for adoption should be lower in early game, but should continue during the entire game (so you should have a change for a new adoption EVERY turn, for the entire game, how to do that?

But in the late game, the real problem hits as said :
no new birts will occur no matter what.
you might have 25 fertile couples of 18 yo, but they will not even make 1 baby what-soever.
it seems that after you've reaches a certain number of family members, relative to the number of provinces in your empire, birts are prevented completely.
(I haven't found this out in the sourcecode, but by experience, no births will occur if number of owned ADULT family members is larger than number of provinces owned)
Logially I wish to change this, and remove this limitation alltogether... or to increase it to such an large number it will never be reached, how to do that?

If you can tell me where to change these settings in the game folders (what text to edit) I would be very gratefull.

Not noticed this in my first campaign. Practically swimming in dudes at the moment. Still 25 regions so far so who knows.

yeah, and while one can BUY new family members (by bribing the occasional barbarian family member spawning)

I still find it stupid that all of the sudden birth rates jump to 0, just becaus there is not enough "lebensraum" in your empire... and still want to change that mechanic.

Stlll would like an answer on this (no there is NO game-style solution for this, one needs to MOD this.. all I want to know is where to find the data in the game files to mod this.. if I know where they are, I should be able to make the mod myself (I cant mod what I cant find..)

Guys, I think i remember a guide stating the game can be quite tricky about this, good hygiene facilities like sewers etc raises fertility in couples, plus these males do not reproduce if they're fighting some barbs in Gaul, they have to be in a city to produce offspring apparently.

that does not circumvent the problems i asked for, and will not work to solve the problems I adressed.

Problem 1 : maximal 1 marriage proposal per turn, causing a bottleneck sitation in big family's.
(as sisters have to wait for eachother to get a marriage proposal, their average age at the moment they get such a proposal rises ever more, causing the average age of the generals proposing to your daugters to rise as well, and their quality dropping)

Theoretical Fix : mod the game to allow for more than 1 marriage-proposals per turn.

Question : how to Mod the game to allow more marriages per turn?

Problem 2 : The only two ingame solutions to negative family growth, adoption and man-of-the-moment, are limited to 5 uses each. This means it will not solve the problem in late game.

Theoretical Fix : mod the game to allow unlimited man-of-the-moment and adoptions.

Question : how to Mod the indicators for the "man of the moment" and "adoption" event happening, to allow them to happen unlimited times, and with different prerequisits?

Problem 3 : the game will set birthrate to 0, if the number of generals+male kids you own is higher than the number of provinces you own. This will cause you to have about 8 adult generals per 10 provinces, where ideally you would like to have 2 per province, plus 10 extra to lead your armies, not counting children.

Theoretical fix : remove this counter alltogether, or replace it by 99999*provinces, instead of 1*provinces.

Question : how to remove this counter, or mod it to be higher than 1?

What I do is bribe other family mambers and have them stay at my towns and cities. Now, im have a bunch of kids who need to grow up into generals of my legions.
