You have given me inspiration to play as the Goths. I got to say that you are correct. About my 8th turn I was attacked by the full onslaught of the Vandals. BUT, here is my true suggestion:
1. For the first few turns just keep the order of your original city and MAKE SURE you capture the city next to it! (Rebel City, early on)
2. Train another diplomat and GET ALLIANCES AND TRADE RIGHTS with as many factions as possible (Alliances were easy to get with majority of the northern barbarian factions)
3. DO NOT attack western or eastern Roman Factions nor their rebels
4. THIS IS IMPORTANT: (how I survived after they attacked and conquered my first original city)
Most likely there will be the western roman rebels(green) that will pop up and have 2 cities. Do not conquer these, these will be a short time distraction for western Romans to handle with BUT there is a rebel town above the (Green Roman Rebels top city) CAPTURE THIS TOWN ABOVE IT (this will be your new capital)
5. Once the Vandals have conquered your main city and MAYBE your first conquered town to the left of it, you will now have the town I mentioned (far enough from huns and vandals for a few turns) BUT very close to Western Romans (they will probably have conquered those Green Rebels by now)
6. EXPAND: train troops and get your new city upgrades with stables, etc. Then expand into Rome or try to conquer the Vandals since they have settled down.
Hoped this helped: GOOD LUCK
Cheers,
Thanks,
Well I also was about to get under attack by the huns but I was lucky enough for the huns to get caught up with Samarians/other factions to the east.
I would try to just expand northward then, maybe that will buy you some time to settle and build up defenses.
"KEY thing with the Goths is to (unlike other factions) make difficult choices on which settlements to sacrifice until you have a good attack force/defense."
But I agree with the others in capturing other 2 rebel cities, they're not so hard to take, and will provide much needed coin for defence of the capital.
