Rome: Total War

Rome: Total War

Patch 1.51 , performance problems...
Bought the steam version a few days ago and after installing it I noticed I only got 15~20 fps in both campaign and battle map. My computer is by no means old and should be able to play this game on high settings. I've tried forcing the game to use only one core but that didn't help. I've learned that the problem may come from the recent patch Steam released that would supposedly make RTW's multiplayer be supported by Steam, there are complaints that this patch did more than that and has broken the singleplayer instead. I want to know whether anybody know a fix or if another patch is coming, please.

We are at patch 1.6.1.1

There are a number of fixes depending upon your particular hardware though some of these are to a point, Start with system brand and model numer with any changes you have made or if it is custom list the parts by manufacturer IDs though I can already guess Windows 8.1.

Have you ensured that your computer is using your graphics card for the game instead of using a CPU's integrated graphics?

Yes I checked through the Nvidia control panel.

It's a laptop from HP, not sure what you mean by model number but mine seems to be a 15 - r004np:
-Procesor is an i5 - 4210U 1.70 GHz.
-4 gb of ram.
-Graphics card is geforce 820M.
All running on windows 8.1.

If I failed to post all the specs please tell me and I'll see what I can do. Thanks in advance.
My apologies up front... Intel CPUs that have the onboard HD feature is going to leave you campaign lag at times. I cannot change that. As for the remainder, make sure your desktop resolution is exactly the same as your campaign and battle settings, turn off shadows, make sure AA is turned off, go into the Gefore Control Panel, 3D settings, go to Rome.exe, set prerendered frames to 1. Also, open File Explorer so you see C drive like the old "My computer", click C drive and then right click to select properties, uncheck indexing and allow it to run. Select "Ignore All" when it asks, and allow it to finish. If you have a secondary hard drive, do the same for it as well.

Put all that into place and let me know what is better and what is not so we can go from there.

I did everything you said except for turning off indexing. From what I know indexing helps to find the files in the Hard Drive so turning it off is weird for me. And after I turn it off, if I ever need to turn it back on won't I have to check what kind of files to index? Supposedly, if I select too many files won't that be bad for performance? I'm sorry for all these question but I wanna double check all changes I do to the computer so I don't mess anything up.
That is your choice. If you are asking what it will mean to turn it off... In English, The files I told you to ignore all are the files that cannot be unindexed. Otherwise, indexing keeps up with every single file on your hard drive and scans for changes regularly. This is a feature so if you want to find a file you do not know where it went you can serch and find it in 10 minutes rather than 20 if it really has to search. Your programs all know exactly where their files are so why should you have to keep up with it constantly? You will free up both memory and available access to your hard drives making everything run faster. You can turn it back on and it will ask you every time you search if you want to make searches faster and if you select yes you only turn indexing back on.
I propose here While no solution but would like to say that I also have a laptop with an Intel OneBoard graphic card and it runs perfectly at medium setting without laggs.

I cannot give you kudos without insulting most everyone else. You see, I have an intel CPU with onboard HD 4000 and an optimus Nvidia 540M and Rome, including Rome 2 along with even a few games I am below minimum specs, runs just fine.

Some people will have problems and some will not and they may have the exact same machine. The problems are not truly the machine, but the activities the user performs on said machine including what protections you may or may not have and even what web sites you may visit. I have even noticed the more problems people have, the more instances of playing "FREE" games have occurred on said system. People, there is absolutely NOTHING free in this life or world. And yes, I am even daring a Christian to stand up and say Salvation is free so I can show them how wrong they are as well.

Older games have two problems... First, they do not recognize or know how to use newer hardware and software properly as its specs were not included in its programming. Second, knowing little or nothing of the internet and how it interacts and affects your computer.
I do not understand a word , Sorry

Patch 1.6.1.1? Is that official or something? Where do I get it?
patch 1.6.1.1 is the final Steam Version. 1.6.1 is the final disk version.
Don't listen to these losers, i'm having the same problem as you. My laptop is even worse than yours, and before the switch from gamespy to steam servers I was playing this game on the highest settings 60 fps all the time. Then came the horrible steam integration, and since then I haven't been able to play the game with more than 15 singleplayer, and 5 fps multiplayer. Thanks alot for the downgrade devs.
Withought even looking at the code I am fairly certain the problem lies with incorrect threading. So even when you are playing singleplayer the game is always contacting steam servers which in turn, slows the game down drastically. Even if that's not the problem, please developers, try to find a fix for this. I really want to play my all time favorite game.
Oh, and also.... my game still says v 1.51 at the top right of the main menu.
