help with screen resolution

hi guys i have the game but i havent added it on steam i have it on disk and i have jus recently got a new laptop with screen resolution 1366x768 and i end up with those nasty black bars across the side of the screen can anyone tell me how to change the resolution so as it fits my screen. thank you any help will be much appreciated

Just follow these instructions. You basically just have to edit your preferences file in your RTW folder.

i have windows 8 and the activision file isnt there

Problem only with this game?
Maybe it was videocard problems. Radeon? I had such problem with this videocard, fix with modifying smth in CCC(Catalust Control Center).

C:\Program Files\The Creative Assembly\Rome - Total War\preferences\preferences.txt

Edit these lines to match your screen resolution (1366x768?):

STRATEGY_RESOLUTION:1366x768
STRATEGY_MAX_RESOLUTION:1366x768

BATTLE_RESOLUTION:1366x768
BATTLE_MAX_RESOLUTION:1366x768

USE_WIDESCREEN:TRUE

i get to rome total war file and thereis no preferences folder thers only
data, direct x,miles, games spy arcade,games spy, icon,mss32.dll and rome total war launch button

solved mine, i replaced all everywhere i saw a 1024 or 768.

You should go to the game options in steam and browse local files instead of going through the c drive, I.E. mine is not on c. Also i had to play once to make that pref file appear, menu doesn't count
