RTW and BI crashing on startup

[don't flame me, I'm rusty]

I'm running Windows 10 on a new PC, and wanted to install RTW and mods as I did on my old PC. I decided to just test vanilla and make sure it was working, however it crashes on startup.

I've tried verifying the files and modifying the launch options (-nm -ne etc)

I've also gone into the preferences folders in the game files but the only thing present is a txt document called "player" which contains nothing.

Suggestions?

Paste in the following after the line of asterisks in this post to your preferences. Change BOTH campaign min and max resolution to match your desktop. That will get it to load, but you need a few more steps to assist with getting around the permissions problem you have with your windows account and getting it to run smoothly.

NOTE: Open my profile, scroll to Guides, open the one hosted by me and alQumar (sp?) and you have an over abundance of information on this issue. Rome was blacklisted and would pop open a message in Windows 10 about unable to install because incompatible. Took me months to find that incompatibility and why to be able to make it work, submit the work, and get Rome removed from blacklisting. Only telling you this so you KNOW, follow that guide and you will play Rome as problem free as your system will allow.

This did not solve the issue. I also looked up your guide, but I didn't really understand what you meant by anything? RTW will only work on certain Windows versions?

I have hired hands this week on my farm and surgery tomorrow. It will be a few days before I can really be back to talk you through step by step. Remastered works fine, it just has horrible coloring.

Sounds to me like you're using the disc version. Unfortunately, the disc version is completely unplayable due to a Windows update that removed some things and now most old games are completely unplayable. There are some workarounds supposedly but they involve downloading those things missing and adding them to your PC. If you look around TWcenter with this exact question you'll find threads regarding it.

Ah that's a good theory but unfortunately nope, it's the steam version.
