If you attempted to install Rome to Windows 10, check and make sure there are four files in the preferences folder as well. If not, let me know and that is a different fix.
EDIT: If you are attempting to run a mod, there are only a rare few that will work after upgrade to 10
Hawk, I did what you said with the DLL's and am still having the same problem. Mine is the same situation as above. How do I switch to a different video player? Maybe that will fix it.
Set the exe files to XP service pack 2. Go into your video manager like NVIDIA Control Panel or Catalyst Control Panel into 3d Settings and set prerendered frames to one for Rome.
For videos, find one of each type and simply right click, open with, choose program, pick from the list and check the always use and open. That will work around the upgrade reset of all apps to microsoft preferred apps.
Lastly, you may need to check not your sreen resoution, but your video properties on the old style windows popout and select list all modes selecting your resolution manually. If you are using an HDMI connection, 10 automatically sets it to a "p" resolution and that will not work with older games as older games need a two number resolution.
I have set the compatability to Windows 7 and also to Windows XP SP3 (no option for SP2), still does not start.
The game ran when I first had Windows 10 (on the first day) but has not since. On booting the exe the desktop flickers between two resolutions for about a minute and then comes up with the "Rome: Total War failed to find DirectX9, which is required for the game to run. Please reinstall DirectX."
Windows 10 will not allow me to re-install DirectX 9 as it says it is incompatible.
I do not have CCC installed. It will not install correctly under Windows 10. I currently have amd-catalyst-15.7.1-win10-64bit installed.
dxdiag shows my current Direct X version to be 11.1
Windows Update has not further updates for me at present.
I have also ensured that there are four files present, the pref txt being set in its resolution to that of the desktop...
Thoughts?
EDIT: SOLVED. No need to do anything with any Direct X or exes. Simple solution for me was to go into the prefs folder and change AA_QUALITY to AA_OFF - RTW, BI and mods now all working (inc. in-game vids).
thx mate , all working
Also check your driver to make sure Windows 10 did not update it and you need to reboot. You can do this is device manager.
You, sir, are a genius.
You can also switch to windowed mode (add -ne to launch options) if you want AA on...which is how I do it these days. You may have to change the battle and campaign map resolution to match your desktop if the game or mod doesn't fill the while screen.
