Rome: Total War

Rome: Total War

Enemy units move too fast on campaign map
When I end turn, every unit on the map yeets itself into moving at the speed of light, can't really see where they end up playing like this, its like they teleport, specially diplomats
Often a unit ends near a city and ends up being a nuisance
Anyone know a fix to this? I tried editing the preferences file, changing campaign map unit speed, but it resets itself to 99 automatically
Setting the file to read only causes some crash issues so I don't think I can do that either

Press spacebar.

I tried that and didn't do anything, but then I checked the controls and the FPS control layout didn't have the speed up movement binded to spacebar, is that the option you mentioned?
Or should it work regardless of the control settings?

1st question: yes
2nd question: no.

I tried it and sadly it didn't work, space only works for movement of my units on my turn, all enemy units still move really fast
I don't know if this is intended behavior but it surely seems like it's not working properly

from my experience, it cant get as slow as it does in medieval 2. try pressing space bar once right after you click on end turn button, it should slow some things down, but you'll still miss a lot of stuff

I tested a bit more and its definitely a problem with this pc more than anything else, I have also seen this light speed AI with some youtube gameplays but in my desktop rig without any addons on the game, the turn end runs perfectly fine, and spacebar also speeds up units like it's supposed to do.
I will tinker around a bit more to see if I can fix it
Also unrelated but on desktop Medieval 2 runs at 60 fps without issues but Rome struggles to reach 20-30...

Hey Archael you should ask other questions in a different post so people with the same issue can find it better.

But basically RTW uses an old software interface to talk to your graphics card. You can fix this by using a wrapper that will intercept the communication and translate it to a newer interface such as DirectX9, 10, 11 etc.

A wrapper takes the form of a .dll file that you have to copy to the game's directory (where rome total war is located on your computer). It will then be loaded automatically when you start the game.

I use those two together, it should roughtly double your fps:

To get to rome total war's directory right click it in your steam library then Manage > Browse local files.

It may look like it's complicated but it's not, read carefully and report back if you can't figure it out.
It should look like this in the end: https://i.postimg.cc/k43WqP8H/image.png

cheers

D3D8 also breaks fire projectiles and terrain textures in the campaign maps, and most probably other stuff I didn't notice when I tried it a while ago. not worth imo.

Thanks for the help, sadly DDraw didn't work for me, it reduced the FPS instead of increasing it for some reason
After tinkering with many fixes I found online, the best performance I could get was with a downgrade to 1.5, that boosted my fps a fair bit, and using the d3d8 dll, since im on an optimus laptop
Now I just need to figure out how to make rome work in my other computer

Wrong. This is no issue anymore since the most recent version.
