Enemy General Body Guards are invincible
something I've noticed is that pre-marian units are cut through like butter by the any general bodyguard. It takes 3+ full roman calvary to take even 50 body guards and fighting without triarii is almost impossible. I one time had 6 principe units get completely obliterated by a single body guard unit. I've never seen anyone talk about this and was wondering what you guys do to deal with them?

Did you check his trait?
Maybe he has the trait that increase his bodyguard's hit point or something.

I usually let them come then I flank them with my own bodyguards. They losing so much man and their morale is going potato.

Use your own. Generals bodyguards are stupidly overpowered. 9 Chevrons + armor and weapon upgrades with 100 models can win against a full stack.
Bodygaurd units are very powerfull early game, but as the game progresses and you unlock better units you should eventuely be able to recruit units that can take one head on.

(unless its an faction leader witch has double the bodygaurds or an general with an insane amount of traits and expierence)

6 principes should be able to take out an general no problem unless they are tired and the enemy general has traits / expierence.
Barbarian generals in the early era are well-known to be OP.

Are you per-chance using those Equites in wedge formation? They're only light cavalry and wedge gives them a big disadvantage in hand-to-hand once units have closed to melee.
Charge 'em back with your own bodyguard!

Chariots are doomed to commanders unless your playing Egypt pre marian.

Yeah, but that doesn't explain how you can beat them early game. Early game they can rush a Phalanx head on and come out on top. They're stupidly OP. Nerfing bodyguard to be a support unit is one of the things that the newer Total Wars did so much better.

Try building up a blacksmith and armourer. Your generals bodyguard are much tougher when they are well armed and armoured. Weaponary and armour is a decisive factor between two otherwise evenly matched units.

You won't be evenly matched in higher difficulties. This will only apply to normal or easy batlle difficulty.

Indeed. Very hard 'battle difficult' isn't so much to do with the AI being more intelligent it's more to do with the AI forces having considerable buffs so they can field identical units that can outmatch yours man for man. It's such a cheap way of making battles harder by simply given the AI buffs and bonuses. There are mods that improve the battlefield AI but not considerably.

On Very Hard difficulty Ai receives + 7 attack for all of their units. So they basicly have 7 chevron advantage at all times. That's why their missile units are extremely dangerous.

i once took out a 2000 strong unit of roman forces post-marian with a half strength band of sacred cav, a few elephants and a few sacred band infantry as carthage. The elephants rolfstomped through the roman infantry lines killing hundreds on the opening attack, the sacred infantry got massacred by roman horse units, but if you know how, any heavily armoured and armed units with fantastic morale could be considered impossible to beat, especially with shield and sword upgrades.

you just need to know where and how to attack, but because the ai is so predictable, you can use that and exploit it.

Dont use pre marian Cav in any battle against a nation better then yours at the time. like greeks easy with roman pre marian. guals are easy but britains and germans will be harder. so focus on weak nations. if you gonna be in pre marian... so the general wont be cut to butter if you use hit and run. you dont use your cav in prolong combat unlike post marius reforms the general cav can carry any battle.
