Rome: Total War

Rome: Total War

Anyone else refuses to do Siege battles?
So l have been playing this game for like 11 years now and l remember fondly of doing siege battles when l was a kid and storming walls Roman walls with my barbarian units or defending cities.
Now l dont even make them unless l cant win with auto resolve (the offensive ones)

So my point is :
-You basically loose all your advantages as a player.

You can barrelly use your Cav (which win us the campaign xD) having to walk the entire city length making them very tired in huge citties if you dont want to stare at units running for 15 min.

Infantry is another problems because its basically consists in funniling units down in the streets making you take huge losses!

The walls are increadibly bugged, you also loose a lot of units storming the walls not to mention how time consuming it is. Unit movement there is a nightmare especially for the defenders (if l move my units to a better position they will just move there and then run away to another section so basically l have to get their position right and not move them).
Another thing are the siege towers which can fire off balistas. Man this is the nail in the coffin in wall fighting. They will just completly swippe off your units off the walls or weaken them a lot! Pulling reinforcements to the walls is not a option since they just run away at the moment they stop where l told them

l abuse the hell out of the defensive sieges, basically just get stone walls, AI will loose ton of units walking around the city and taking arrow fire and then you can basically get pikes (which are available for most factions, if not, there are some Heavy Infantry to normally replace them) and camp in the streets.

Last point is that how time consuming and borring it gets because the small town ones, being honest here, l can get some pleasure out of it, but starting from Small Cities its a nightmare to be able to use the flanking routes

Man l dunno l just avoid doing sieges in general, once you realise how the game works or you loose the ilusion of role playing you see how kind of broken and why you should avoid them =/

What I really hate is sallying forth as the defender. It's so time-consuming and tedious getting all your men out of the city and into a decent formation. If I fancy the odds, I just auto-resolve in such cases.
I quite like defending cities when the AI does actually assault. As you said, it can be pretty dumb and loses lots of men to towers and the like. I usually paste it by keeping archers on the walls and my heavies in the central plaza. But occassionally this strategy backfires and the AI sends in better units than I have and it beats me, despite taking major losses.
I agree the field battles are usually more fun than sieges but sieges can sometimes be fun. It can also be fun to the attacker in sieges, even if tedious at times.

I find it funny how the AI can spend 4 to 5 turns building up siege equipment & then when it came to battle, they just destroy your gates & walls with catapults, drop siege equipment & flood into the city. I mean, in that scene, siege battles are quicker passed.

I have to say though, as much as I love to role play & fantasize the glory of battle! I honestly think it would just be all over, if an entire army had rushed into your city! but defending the streets rather then the walls is literally the only proper way to defend.

Tp be honest, my number one best battle was a siege battle I was the attacker in. Double hard, and the egyptians just northwest of Antioch had eight armies stacked to greet me and by the end of the battle I won by the skin of my teeth I literally had 6 men left from a urban cohort unit. That was sooo ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ fun. But that was also before they changed battle mechanics. Not really possible to have the same kinda battle again.

numbers balances i think . they even up stats for say gladtiors also just how u got certin units was effected. main muitplatey semi balacnes all roman factions have equal glads. desery cav wen from a inf stack number to a reg cav .

i agree tbh, assaulting cities with stone/brick walls always has to result in u losing tons of men to the towers (which are 100% impossible to avoid however well ur siege equipment is place) and they dont stop shooting at u until you've captured the walls which requirs u going up to the wall and beating the infantry guarding it. also thats another thing, ur infantry has to go up to there infantry and beat them in a raw prelonged melee and u cant do anything more strategic than simply surrounding them with multiple units, also u cant use special abilities so phalanx units are way less effective. also cav cant fight on walls so u have to rely on ur infantry to do all the wall capturing so if ur using a faction like Parthia or Scythia which dont have good infantry and ur up against an army that has legionary cohort or something a lot better than what u have then the only way u can win is by using battering rams (which almost always get burnt down in stone/brick war battles) or by using artillery or saps to destroy the walls. And if so then ur subjected to being madly shot at by the walls and taking way more casualties than needed. Also units on walls once they start to rout they dont retreat instead they just stand on the walls and 'fight to the death' for the rest of the battle so they never reform. Oh and good luck doing an advanced siege battle in less than 20 minutes

but yeah defensive sieges are a game breaker so i'll give it that

seige battles are easy and if youre gonna do seige battles just use 4x time so you can cross the map faster unless your doing mutiplayer then it ruins the fun. if you have hard time getting on the walls use seige towers with iron sheilding as those pack a massive punch and destroys enemies like a full blown tower.

you want to make attacking walls easy in RTW, play a game of M2TW and attack a few castles.

What no... l dont want it easy at all l never said that, dont place words in my mouth.

lm ranting how broken it is, l used to love to assult walls in CD version while in the steam the unit simply doestn stand in place so its impossible to do wall figthing.

Seing its broken and you cant get much benefit or get an advantage and tedious it, is why should l do it? This is my point dont go ahead and place words in my mouth
