AUC requires the Alexander expansion, but this is actually a good thing because Steam installs Alexander separately.

Darthmod, I'd say is more for the fun, also quite challenging, I especially like the new units and the way the punic war is presented for example. I've heard Res Gestae is quite good as well, but never played it myself

Masterpieces. EB is indeed as previously mentioned very well done and very satisfyingly hard. A campaign can take months and months to complete.
Especially if you're playing a non-roman faction, the campaigns are much more satisfying and fleshed out than in vanilla; the rebalance of nations, economy, units and map is phenomenal.
The scripted reforms for the romans are well thought out enough; the ones for Hayasdan (Armenia) where you start of as a displaced Persian/Armenian dynast and can eventually rebuild an Achaemenid empire, or the Parthia one where you go from nomad to Persian Emperor are amazing.
The Celtic-type factions get some much-needed love too, and get a nifty trade-based reform system that gives them serious teeth.
Most factions have a MUCH more competitive roster of units, and a well-designed AOR system limits where you can get your classic factional units from, while offering you other tactical options as you expand.
My personal favourites are pretty much every faction i've played as - they all offer intriguing opportunities, challenges, and progression. For a newcomer to the mod, i'd recommend Bactria or Carthage - unless you're a romosexual in which case you will prolly be delighted as well ;)
The Saka, Hayasdan, and Lusotann for example are great fun to play as once you feel comfortable; their armies can become utterly terrifying mostrosites!
Other good mods include Rome Total Realism and Roma S u r r e c t u m; i've heard and seen only good things about them.
