Rome: Total War

Do you have to conquer all Roman settlements?
I am about mid game and it's my first play through. I just wondered, are there are enough settlements to conquer to in order to own 50 'before' you declare war on Rome?

Play as a roman faction:

You need about 30-40 settlements before the game will prompt you that you have popular support to take Rome, you have two of these prmpts if you wish to declare war on Rome and if you ignore those, on the third attempt Rome itself invents charges of treason against your faction and the other two factions turn enemies as well. You only need to hold rome and 50 other settlements to win.

Play as any other faction:

Just take rome and the 50 settlements.

There are I think 102 settlements in total in the map, of you manage to get 49 other settlements before the other Roman factions do all you need is to capture Rome in the turn you declare war and you win the game.

You can declare war on your allied Roman factions as early as 20 settlements if your popularity among the plebs is sufficient. Your popularity is affected by how wealthy you are, number of battles you win, and certain traits your family members possess. I often ignore the senate missions that make no sense like blockading a port for my allied romans wars. Julii has an easier time gaming plebeian popularity than the other two, scipii are characteristic of senate ass kissers, and the brutii are the tougher merchant and militaristic faction having come from a poorer family line.

Thanks. P!aying Julii and have taken much of western Europe so far, deciding where to head next.

I've taken everything west and north of Italy but not east and all of egypt and all the Wonders except the one in Greek lands. I'm in 217bc and about to declare war on rome once I have my armies back to europe. I have over 50 and just have to take rome now...

EDIT: I'm playing julii

Nice work, good luck with the rest of your campaign. :)
I'm fairly sure you can declare war on anyone you like at Turn 1.

I'm also fairly sure that doing so is a terrible idea.

In vanilla, Roman factions cannot declare war on each other at the beginning of the game, the game simply doesn’t allow it.

Me too, I recently went to war with germania but nowhere else to expand, unless I want to fight half the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ world (Egypt)
Also do Egypt always become a huge empire in mid/late game?

I have watched other play thoroughs and no, sometimes they lose a lot of settlements to the other factions. Not in my game though 😕

...although this playthrough I have managed to take a few cities already. I accumulated so much cash I have just been bribing the settlements and taking them that way. Alot of their cities have hardly any units in but they seem to have HUGE armies just wandering around. :s

love bribing other roman cities, because their units and their family members then join your side, versus bribing culturally different faction where the army just disbands. Wish you bribe a faction to its destruction, but alas, you cannot bribe faction heir's and leaders.

Only been bribing the Eygptians so far as they are a pain to fight against.
