Graphics options and highest resolutions not available
Hi guys. I've recently re installed RTW and for some reason the gameis not letting me access that the higher graphics settings and screen resolutions in-game. Its not as though they are greyed out or not working. They simply do not appear. I want to run in 1920x1080 and with the high anti aliasing setting switched on but the are not there. I'm definitely running on dedicated graphics so that isn't the issue. Any ideas?

1-Go to your Rome Total War folder.
2-Go to Preferences folder.
3-Open preferences via notepad.
4-USE_WIDESCREEN should be FALSE. Change it to TRUE.
5-Find these:
STRATEGY_RESOLUTION:your resolution here
STRATEGY_MAX_RESOLUTION:your resolution here
BATTLE_RESOLUTION:your resolution here
BATTLE_MAX_RESOLUTION:your resolution here
-Change the resolution to any resolution you want. For example
BATTLE_RESOLUTION:1920x1080
BATTLE_MAX_RESOLUTION:1920x1080.
STRATEGY is for Campaing Map and BATTLE is for battle map.
Also if you want to change the textures etc. you can find them under the resolutions.
Hope this helps!:steamhappy:

I did this but its still not allowing some of the settings and runs incredibly sluggish. I'm thinking there is an issue with selecting dicrete graphics. Its strange because it has worked fine before this.

You should try verifiying game files, running in administrator or running in Windows XP Service Pack 2 compatibility mode.

If you are on nvidia you must use a special dll or the game runs at like 10 fps, also with it you cannot alt tab

I suggest you to go Rome Total War Heaven[rtw.heavengames.com] or Total War Center[www.twcenter.net] to find a solution. Or you can search in AMD site.

i recently reinstalled empire and had a similar problem of graphics settings being unavailable. I fixed it by changing the gfx_video_memory setting in the preferences script (it was defaulting as 0). Is there an equivalent for RTW?

I recommend using 1024x768 it was made for that and it runs worse the higher you get from my experience.

In one of the other older threads, someone suggested that even on the old physical copies what worked and fixed it all was turning Safe Refresh from false to true. Make a back-up of your file first though. I have not yet tried this, I'm still reading up on it all.

UPDATE:

WORKS FOR ME. I found that my mouse flickered a bit on the intro movie and the campaign selection screen in RTW1. It tended to correct itself once outside the tutorials.

But with SAFE REFRESH set to TRUE, the ESC key had instantaneous response to exit any movie, which did not happen before I chose the TRUE setting for it. In addition, there was no flickering when moving the mouse at any time. Not sure it actually made the mouse move faster, but responsiveness to keyboard input and mouse clicks did not require any repeat clicking. Seems worth a try for those with MOUSE LAG.

I don't know if you are still active, I don't think you even remember this comment you made, but I thank you very much for it, made my day for this old gem!

Is there a way to get 2560 X 1440p resolution?
