Alternative ways to play
What are some fun alternative ways to play RTW? I mean in terms of setting a different goal, other than just conquoring the world.

Any cool stipulation or role-play type campaigns you can recommend? I've been playing for years so it would be fun to hear how you guys keep the game entertaining.

I decided to play the game with Greeks defending just the Sparta. No another city, no occupations. I like it in the Very Hard difficulty. Of couse there are some cheats. I upgrade the city to full and do some money cheat. And declare war at everyone with blocking ports. So the most of the world is at war with you and you're defending the city with Spartans. Did this once and it was so good. I recommend it. Or you can do this with another nations like one of the Roman families.

try making use of the numidians with everyone at war against you. you'd be lucky to make any progress at all with a few of those captured african towns with a population barely above 100! let alone losing you two powerhouse towns along the coast of the med.

try playing slaves on harder difficulty and find out what a true challenge is. (edit that strat file and make slaves playable)
Playing as an Roman faction and complete all Senetas missions. Dont declare war yourself, the Senate has to tell you to declare war. You could go full gimmick and dont start the civel war, althrough that means the other roman factions need to be more powerfull then you are, wich can take realy long.

I remember reading about a migration campaign back in Medieval 2.

Bascially, the idea is to sell off all your settlements or let them all rebel (except for the capital), while sending over a force to a different part of the map to settle. Once the new homeland is settled, make it the new capital, and ditch the old one.

You might be able to do something similar in Rome Total War.

Someone has mentioned above, but I too recommend picking a roman faction and doing the same role play as Legend Of Total War youtuber is doing:
You roleplay as the "senates ♥♥♥♥♥" - only declare war and take settlements when the senates tells you, if enemy ai offers ceasefire, beforehand have a look how the senate feels about them and act accordingly
KEEP the bloodline PURE- reject all husbands, your daughters in the family will die virgins, your sons will keep the empire together, keep them alive
also try to rush, if possible marius reforms and progress towards making doomstack legions (11x urban cohort 4x praetorian cav, 5x archer auxilia + general)
scipi is 'the scarriest" since they're guaranteed to get gold-gold upgrades

Get a level 5 temple of the horse from either Gaul or Spain, which would require you to give them a level 5 city to build it in. Or try to get as many different priests in a generals retinue from other factions. Or try a Carthaginian sweep of all romans in under 20 turns.
