try playing slaves on harder difficulty and find out what a true challenge is. (edit that strat file and make slaves playable)
Bascially, the idea is to sell off all your settlements or let them all rebel (except for the capital), while sending over a force to a different part of the map to settle. Once the new homeland is settled, make it the new capital, and ditch the old one.

You might be able to do something similar in Rome Total War.
You roleplay as the "senates ♥♥♥♥♥" - only declare war and take settlements when the senates tells you, if enemy ai offers ceasefire, beforehand have a look how the senate feels about them and act accordingly
KEEP the bloodline PURE- reject all husbands, your daughters in the family will die virgins, your sons will keep the empire together, keep them alive
also try to rush, if possible marius reforms and progress towards making doomstack legions (11x urban cohort 4x praetorian cav, 5x archer auxilia + general)
scipi is 'the scarriest" since they're guaranteed to get gold-gold upgrades
