And thank you titus06 for giving some options. I always played a Barbarian in Diablo and warrior/melee kind in any RPGs, so I guess Conqueror will be the natural choice for me.
Nature is perfect for summon builds in general (traps from Rogue are probably my favourite summon but require more time to get working and +4 all skill to peak, wolves are available from your first level up and make decent tank/dps pets) and has excellent utility skills and is easy to combo with other masteries.
Hunting is pretty strong and straightforward mastery, can be comboed to make a good ranged or spear build easily. Defence is a bit slow to start imo but makes for good tanky builds.
As for a few combos:
Conqueror (Warfare + Defence) as mentioned is a good basic combo to play. Standard 1h+shield type build. Warden (Hunting + Defence) also popular simple spear tank build I believe. Warfare can also be played as a dual wielder, you'd want to get equipment with 'Attack Damage Converted to Health' as this helps with sustain as dual wielders tend to be glass cannons (does not work on undead through or anything else immune to vitality damage so have to pain attention when fighting those)
Haruspex (Hunting + Dream) and Brigand (Hunting + Rogue) are both good ranged combos. Haruspex has more defensive focused abilities, Brigand is a heavy glass cannon in comparison (Brigand can also be played as a heavy spear crit build, ran one of those, you get insane crit damage but you really need cooldown gear so you can use Spear Dance [requires Atlantis] to clear trash and Lethal Strike for big enemies so that build better to later)
If you have Ragnarok, then Rune + ?? makes for a good dual throwing weapon. Rune is perfect for these builds and has pretty much everything you need in it so you can combo with your choice of second mastery pretty much. Makes for a good elemental damage build, converting weapon damage to elemental and using Power Word: Feather to lower str requirements to equip your throwing weapons. Thunder Strike in particular is insane with dual wielding throwing weapons.
For summon builds, Soothsayer (Nature + Spirit) makes a good caster type pet build. Has a lot of pets and good support spells. Champion (Warfare + Nature) gives you an aggressive melee build that can use Nature to keep Warfare's Battle Standard up 100%. Battle Standard turns your wolves into killing machines, one of the top tier summon builds in TQ. Summon builds tend to like a lot of +skill but you can make do with +2 Nature for the third wolf for a while (farm gorgons in act 1 for Stonebinder's Cuffs and you can vendor farm for a Wanderer's Necklace in ~Act 2 or so to get it)
Pure casters and especially hybrid builds are a bit trickier to build/gear so you may want to wait until you have more experience and gear before trying these builds out. Stave casters are easier I'd say, grab a stave with Attack Damage Converted to Health to help with health sustain. Go Spirit for Ternion or Dream for Psionic Beam (Atlantis required)
I also started with that, Level 8 now. I can feel I am getting stronger :)
As a side note, I'm playing with DirectX 9 option, as it has better performance -in my case-. Heard it from somewhere here.
