Look for items with Bonus to Pets on them either from drops or shops.
For gear, you'd want at least two sources of +pet dmg form gear. Rings, necklaces and staves can all roll these stats I believe. I usually go with 2x pet buffing rings (socketed with Demon's Blood for vitality resist) and use other necklace for boosting resistances. Long term you'd also want good resistances, at least +4 all skill and decent CDR and casting speed. In normal you should shoot for +2 Nature early on for the third wolf; Stonebinder's Cuffs (farm elite gorgons or gorgon queen boss fight) + Wanderer's Amulet/Stave (check vendors for amulet, equippable at level 15) will get you the +2 Nature you need.
For skills, in Nature you'd want, among other things , wolves for dps/tanking, aura for heal, plague for resistance reduction. Briar Ward and Earthbind good for keeping you alive and Refresh lets you deal with cooldowns effectively letting you speed summon wolves. Nymph I usually use as 1 point + all skills as it gets really skill intensive to level all these skills up. In Earth you'd want Core Dweller to tank, one point wonders in Heat Shield and Stone Form and a couple of good spell supports such as Eruption and Volcanic Orb.
Wolves are very strong early game, but fall off heavly later on. If you want a good tank, you need to invest into the Core Dweller from Earth Mastery. You can go Wolves but you will have a very active playstyle where you resummon the wolves non stop later on. The choice is up to you, but you cant have both the Wolves and the Core Dweller at the same time since you wont have enough points to also get other vital skills.
My suggestion;
- Start with Earth Mastery
Get 1 level in Earth Enchantment, then max out Brimstone.
Pick 1 level in Stone Form as a panic button, you can heal with potions while you use this.
Then beeline it for the Core Dweller and its skills, max it out.
- Switch To Nature Mastery
Max out Heart of Oak Aura, but not its enhancement skills.
Get the Nymph and max her out.
In between maxing the Nymph, you can also get Brair Ward and put a single point in all 3 of its skills.
Now we need to start healing our Core Dweller instead of resummoning it. So get 1 level in Regrowth, then 1 level in Dissemination, then max out Regrowth.
Dont bother with Accelerated Growth.
Max out Heart of Oak's top skill ''Permanence of Stone''
Lastly max out Earth Enchantment Skills (all 3)
You now have a heavy tank Core Dweller that you can heal, Nymph is your damage dealer, and you have both Heals and Defensive spells to keep everyone alive.
You should have 8 more mastery points to spend if you max out your character level.
For Gear, look out for items that give your pets extra Elemental damage.
You also want to get stun and skill disruption protection for yourself.
This build is strong enough that you dont need specific drops, so if you dont want to grind out gear... just buy some pet gear from shops when you dont get drops.
