Is this normal for gear stats?
I'm finding lots of nice green set gear but requirments are something my character has no need of?? For example I just came across a nice piece of set gear which gives +1 to all hunter skills. Well I wanted to give it to my hunter but the requirments to wear it are a ton of strength?? My hunter is focusing heavy on Dexterity, not strength, I have no need of strength but in order to get this nice skill buff I have to put a ton of points into strength...I don't get it, this is happening alot, is this normal?

yes
looks like it is one of your first toons... here some advices

when you level up use 2 of your skills points to "feed" your mastery tree, the reamaninig one goes into skills: attributes and health have higher returns in the first part of the game. higher attributes will also help to meet gear requirements

every build has its own attribute stats distribution. for bow hunter and related it is 1:1 strength to dex ratio. It's true that you want to focus on dex, but str is important for armor and also for raw damage itself, so never underestimate str importance

You don't have to max only dexterity. Pierce damage is just part of overall damage (for spears ~ 30%, for bows ~ 50%), rest part is determined mostly by your strength. Good armors always require a lot of strength.

Green items is not set items, they just got random affixes. It's possible to get piercing damage on int based armor, int on shields, etc.
Kotli Sep 23, 2016 @ 1:18pm
Stats required to use an item is based on the base item type not it affixes.
Green items is the same as yellow gear apart from it got a rare affix on it.

Theres low strength high dex gear for hunters see the Tracker's set (that a real set) requires 159 STR 394 DEX. 1Not far from the 145 STR some bows need.

In any case STR increases peircing damage as well as normal physical damage.

If you use a weapon, no matter bow, sword, or spear etc as source of your damage, always pump up str as it will up your damage more than dex, Dex in mainly for requirements, and for some offensive and defensive ability. Best armor pieces require anywhere from 400 to over 500 str, so be prepared for that.

To add to the comments above. Most armor-items generally fall into two categories:
1) requires strength
2) requires int, some dex.
Some weapons fall outside, for example:
3) spears, high dex
4) bows, high dex
5) (staffs are high int, swords are mixed str/dex, maces and axes are high str.)
There are some very niche items throughout the game with either no requirements or only high dex (as Kotli said), but you will find very few of them. They are not practical unless you are "twinking" with gear from a past character.

With how scattershot works in Anniversary edition (AE) and how bleed was changed to scale with dex I think you want to favor dex in stats... but since you need to fall into category (1) where most of the good hunter items are, you need "enough strength for items". Which can be from:
1) Base Mastery 2) Stat allocation 3) strength- Items 4) -requirement reduction items
So besides what was already suggested, if you want to wear that e.g. Jade Breastplate faster (I'm guessing), then you can visit the magic shop for rings/amulets of strength :)

Used to be this way, but this was adjusted in the AE. Strength now primarily helps regular physical weapon damage, and dex piercing damage. Check the changelog. You will still need high strength for some items though, but AFA damage, a hunter should not be pumping strength over dex.

+ Pirecing damage now depends less heavily on Strength and more on Dexterity
I hate how this change doesn't tell exact numbers.

Wow, so ALL classes casters, bows, etc.. need strength for overall damage correct? Not used to this, all my characters are low in strength except my warriors lol

No all. Those who are relying on common types of weapons with physical damage (spears, bows, swords, axes, maces). Stuffs have elemental damage (fire, cold, lightning) so casters don't need STR.

But STR increases physical damage not only from weapons, but also from spells. So if you're using such type of spells that deal physical damage, STR is also important.

Not strength, it depends:

Physical Damage from weapons increases by 100% per 500 Str.
Pierce Damage from weapons increases by 100% per 2000 Str and 100% per 400 Dex.

Physical Damage from spells/items increases by 100% per 650 Str.
Pierce Damage from spells/items increases by 100% per 1000 Dex.

Fire/Cold/Lightning Damage increases by 100% per 650 Int.
Elemental Damage increases by 100% per 650 Int.
Vitality Damage increases by 100% per 650 Int.

Burn/Frostburn/Electrical Burn Damage increases by 100% per 500 Int.
Poison Damage increases by 100% per 500 Dex.
Bleeding Damage increases by 100% per 500 Dex.

Life & Mana Leech increase by (CharacterLevel * 2,5) %
Retaliation Damages increase by (CharacterLevel^2 / 12.5) %

It does not scale in breakpoints.
