I would think templar would be more of a tank character whereas paladin more dps focused.
Depends on your play style I guess.
defense still has that awful start that turns off many ppl before defense becomes amazing, but you can start as dream and unlock defense later to migrate that and yes def becomes amazing around mid epic or early epic if you get a purple quality shield....defense allows you to dual wield even with a shield, reduce shield block cooldown dramatically so even if surrounded you will prob block a lot of them, highest hp gains on mastery increases, and iron will which blocks the things in legendary that will get you killed including things like stun and entanglement which kills a lot of toons...defense is a slow start but it def pays off...
since you want no pets, dream can go without nitemare but most just add 1 point since he has very high resistances and confuses enemies with 2 points (1 in add on and 1 in himself) but you can go without and just grab the survivability from dream and the dps stuff like phantom strike and become a decent 1 man army and a decent ally in online as trances effect them too...dream+defence is one of the tankiest builds in the game not as tanky as rune+defense or nature+defense though...
paladin is a hybrid thus does lower dps overall and has accuracy problems due to not increasing offense ability, and 2 different dps stats though most pallys go str build and just use storm for covering fire as squall messes with archer aim and lowers resistance, the wisp tanks decently if enemies have no avoidables, and ya thunderball even with 1 point is a ranged stun...seeing how you will start as def you will expect a weak start and then add on storm for the covering fire at long range which is defenses weakness which is lack of long range and weak early game.
skill: 3second lightning bolt,1s squall, 1s storm surge, 3s shield charge, 1s batter, 9s rally
equip: plouton set, thunderbolt or hofud (dlc), ikon of zeus artifact / symbol of polymath / elemental rage, golden shield pelaron, eitr relic on ring(dlc)
quick recovery will always be up, you can heal yourself for 5k hp and give yourself 30+ resist all on rally on low cooldowns, collusus form will be up every 30 sec which is really good, and batter becomes a move that you can button mash as it'll alwys be up and shield charge becomes insane...warrior gear wont get close but mage gear pretty much will hit at least 40% with just archmage clasp and you can raise it more if your int is really good. and defense comes with armor handling so you can even equip 380-452 str gear if you give it enough points.
and thats not even counting whats on your 2nd class and seeing a ton of squalls on screen, massive amounts of storm surges, the relics which do crazy dps like ikon of zeus....for rune you get seal of fate every 2-3 sec which is really fast and prob why they gave it a long cooldown lol and doing 1000-1300 elemental damage (3900 damage before int modifiers and % elemental damage) in that time every 3 sec on a maxed stacked 1200+ int runesmith kills fast and defense will keep you alive easily.
and endgame runesmiths easily reach 10k-13k dps on the stat screen which is comparable to the best dps in the game though runesmith has to work really hard on it compared to hunter or warrior buidls which pass 10k without even trying..pally will prob get pretty close to 10k dps esp if you get a good lighting based weapon and get ikon of zeus which is really op on storm toons...templar idk if it can reach close to those numbers even on an int based build but having 100s of hp regen per second and so many safety tools would be nice and there are some great cooldown reduction warrior gear that help get vital skills back sooner but prob not as soon as int based warrior hybrids
trance of wrath and defense could work well, the reduce resistance of enemy will overcome defense lower damage.
