They did, what's what a remaster is. They just updated some things, did some bug fixing, added a few new bosses to fight. The AE version of the game is TQ and IT. And people who owned the digital version of the original game on Steam were able to get AE for free for a certain period of time.
AE being already the original, but "better" isn't a black and white thing. There are great changes, but horribles ones, overall the objectively good ones are QoL additions and changes to damage type scaling with attributes and other +% stats. Playing the original can be seen as step back, because of no quick-cast, auto loot, relic vault, lack of engine speed, but all of these things can be solved with third party solutions (how we were all playing in 2007).
I won't discuss the ghastly changes they made in AE which destroyed the original developers vision of the game that made me go back to play IT in 2016 for a bit, but if you wish to play the original you can get an offline version and get the Fan Patch 1.17, it fixes a lot of bugs. I won't instruct you on how to get a copy of the game though, should be fairly easy to discover that online.
Already found my old disks! After i beat the newest DLC at Legendary, i am thinking of permanently relocating over to the original TQ+IT. I gave a thorough look and didn't like the overall nerf+balance thing, especially with monster infrequents such as Homados and Batrachos Greaves... Or the nerfs at Dream tree skills.
This is a tiny fraction of the amount of fixes that it does.
Of course this is up to you, if you don't care about a lot of the skills not totally working or don't notice it enough to irritate you, have fun!
You'd need the key to be able to get them to work though. Do you have that?
That's actually for the best as something they did in the AE version effected the Steam TQ and TQ:IT version.
When you try to lauch the old version on steam it wants you to enter the key, but doesn't give you anywhere to enter the key data. You end up having to go into the files and manually enter it into the data. Kind of a pain.
I never did use the fan patch and honestly never noticed any problems with the stock game.
I think you can find some very old CDs on Ebay if patient enough.
